Aw, Shucks that's life...

One phrase I learned quite well when working with children with autism was the phrase, "Aw, shucks that's life". Folks with autism don't do well with change and when something interrupts their schedule/routine in life, they tend to get anxious, worried, or upset. (hmmm...hit close to home?). Well, "aw shucks" phrase was used to help them grasp reality once again. The reality in life is that hardship and struggle is inevitable. Well, David and I had our "struggle" this week that brought us once again to the famous phrase. Haley and Andrew also had their struggle as well...read on.

We'll start with Haley and Andrew. Unfortunately, their car got broken into. Haley, after work, came back and had her car window broken and door handle pried apart. A couple thousand repair job, if they choose to fix it. But they are handling it terrifically, and are just waiting and watching God move in the situation.

As for us, we bought a new car, well used car, but new for us! In the first hour of ownership, as David was driving it home, he suddenly found himself on the side of the road with no power. As you can imagine, we were not happy and could not understand why such a thing had to happen. However, our dealership took upon the expenses of towing and repairs. After a whole days worth of tests, they found out that it just happen to be a bad sensor in the engine. So we are now proud owners of a 2001 Honda Civic with 89000 miles! The "newest" car we've ever owned.

On the good side of things, I did get a new 2012 12 meter kite and was able to ride it for about an hour and a half the other day. I hope it can take me to the next level in kiting:)

The New Year

Happy New Year or Hau'oli Makahiki Hou!
Tis another year with new goals and new dreams. In fact, I just finished writing down my new year's resolutions from physical goals to spiritual goals, from travel to my relationship with David. Now, if you are like me...the momentum of a new year seems to die quickly, the goals seem to be forgotten., priorities get rearranged once again, and life can continue to be disorderly and chaotic, the important things once again being put on the back burner. So as a friend, I ask...what do you do to keep the momentum of New Year's Resolutions.

Well, as most of you know we did have an 11 day visit from Dad and Mom Waliszewski and Trevor. Running, the beach, and paddleboarding seem to be the only words in their vocabulary while they are here in Hawaii. We had some very windy days before Christmas, which made the beach more difficult and paddleboarding especially hard, however, all in all their trip to Hawaii was great! For Christmas, I was able, thanks to my great boss, bring Trevor and Andrew on our last trip Swimming with Wild Dolphins. Not only did they see and swim with Dolphins but they had an 80,000lb Humpback Whale swim under the boat. What we like to call a Whale Mugging.
Mom and Dad and Trevor were treated to 2 days of Whale Watching on our Big Yellow Boat the Malaialena. The first day seemed a bit "slow" in sightings, however, the second day we witnessed about 6 breaches in a row from a massive Humpback Whale. They all enjoyed their time with Adventure X Rafting.

As for work, it has been wonderful having Haley come work for ADVX. She has picked things up so well, and seems to be enjoying the job. Unfortunately due to the 40knot winds and then some engine trouble, we did have to cancel the majority of our trips before Christmas, however, once the winds calmed down and our engines were fixed, we had some pretty incredible Whale Watching trips after Christmas, and we hope to continue with the great Whale Watching as the season progresses (the majority of Humpbacks are here Jan-March).

It's been so great having roommates (I hope they can say the same as they get to live with David and I and our quirkyness). I love being able to share life with another Christian couple. With all four of us loving Jesus, life seems good:) Haley and Andrew are hoping to get involved in canoeing. There is a canoe/paddle club just down the road that offers recreational canoeing. Andrew has plugged himself into a gaming community in Kona every Wednesday night. Not sure what they do...but I know he seems to enjoy himself with the guys. If you are looking for some entertainment I have 3 words: Zumba, Haley, and me! Yes, the secret's out...Haley and I have taken up Zumba (in the privacy of our own living room fortunately). Coordination and rhythm are not my strong suit, but I'm working on it. I think I get more of a work out laughing...then I do with actual Zumba. The wind hasn't been great kiting wind...I'm hoping that will soon change. I'm looking forward to a new 12 meter Switch kite on its way:) A very generous Christmas present!! David is still playing hockey with the boys. He also now has a kayak. A few days ago, he went out on his kayak and I went out on my stand up paddleboard and guess what we ran into? A small pod of dolphins! For about 10 minutes we enjoyed the dolphins completely to ourselves....until a zodiac decided to join us and scared them away. It was pretty remarkable. While watching dolphins, a whale decided to breach in the background...boy, God puts on some pretty spectacular shows.

Well, what's 2012 going to bring? We have a political election going on, still in an economic crisis, wars and rumors of wars, and Jesus coming back? etc. We can sometimes get so caught up in things we cannot control, instead, I hope you take time to enjoy the little joys that God brings in life. For us, just a few days ago, it was dolphins and a whale breaching...what little show/joy is God allowing you to participate in? I believe those little things in life are just ways he tells us how much He loves us!!

Mele Kalikimaka 2011!!!

Hello all,

Mele Kalikimaka and Aloha from Hawai’i!

Christmas has always been one of my favorite times of the year. The snow (and yes the Big Island has snow… it’s on the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa as I type this), the cool weather in windy Waikoloa town and the festive music on the radio reminds me of all the great memories of Christmas’ growing up. It isn’t quite the same as a white Colorado Christmas, but enjoying the remarkable geography of the Big Island sure gives it a run for their money. This time of year is a most joyous occasion, from the food and fun, and we are glad to be sharing it with Andrew and Haley, as well as the rest of the Waliszewski clan, Bob, Leesa and Trevor. We’re preparing for a great Christmas here in Hawai’i, but we miss each and every one of you on the mainland during this time!

Kelsey and I are so thankful for everything going on in our lives right now. We are able to play to our hearts’ content as I spearfish as Kelsey chases the wind kiteboarding. My work as a Team Leader (assistant manager) at Target has been quite the growing experience, but has been an enjoyable ride and one that seems to be getting better and better as I stay on and learn how to be a manager in the world of retail. It’s nothing that I thought I would do, but I love working alongside of the awesome crew at Target 2412 in Kona and enjoy seeing how I can help a business operate! Kelsey’s job is just kicking into full swing for the winter Whale Watching season. Imagine being able to take boat trips to watch amazing humpback whales play in the warm Hawaiian waters, and then get paid for it! Her work at Adventure X Rafting keeps her very busy, but it also keeps her in a place where she thrives - working with people to provide visitors and kama aina (locals) with a remarkable trip to see some of God’s most amazing creatures up close!

In all of the busyness of this season, we hope that this season finds you all enjoying time with family and friends, and full of the expectation of real meaning of the season. I have been so in awe at the unfair, minding-blowing move of God that happened all that time ago when the King, the creator of everything wrapped on human flesh to begin His campaign of redemption. When the Father sent Jesus to the world, the entire earth was waiting for His arrival, as it now waits for His return. And what a glorious day that will be! Kelsey and I hope and pray that you may experience the arrival of Jesus in your lives in new ways in 2012!

Merry Christmas. Just today, David and I were talking about this whole "politically correct" movement saying "Happy Holidays". I encourage you, no matter the "politics" never take Christ out of Christmas. How easily we forget how much this little baby changed history. How much this little baby came to change our lives, if we let Him.

Well an update on our lives...
A little shout-out to my hubby who has blown me away this week. Besides working a 39.5 hr week at Target, he changed the spark plugs on my car and fixed my window wiper fluid device:)
He also spray painted our dining table a brown, no longer its original ugly cream color. He currently is making a homemade pizza and bread which friends of ours, the Perkins, taught him to make on Monday during our trip to Hilo. Not sure what has gotten into my husband, but I'm loving it! Call him cook, mechanic, and painter.

Thanks to my aunt, Haley's mom, we have a little Christmas tree which we have decorated. I don't think it will ever feel like Christmas here in Hawaii.

Haley, on Saturday, saw her first whale on our boat, Adventure X Rafting. Starting Dec 20, we are stopping dolphins and switching to Whale Watching...something we are very excited about! Witnessing these 80,000 lb animals breach, is absolutely incredible!

Well may you draw closer to Jesus this Christmas season!

Our New Home....number 5

Aloha,
So we have moved into our 5th place on the Big Island found in the beautiful community of Waikoloa Village. We also have extended our family to Haley and Andrew Hendrickson (my cousin/sis and her hubby). We all thought we would give this idea of community living a shot. So far...we love it!
I must say, that when they first arrived, they had this "deer-in -the-headlights-look" about them. To suddenly up and move from your homestate to a brand new state/ at one time a different country...talk about CHANGE. However, after a good night of sleep they seemed to wake up refreshed and not so overwhelmed. Haley's first day on the boat will be tomorrow with me as we Swim with Dolphins with 15 guests~ Looking forward to having her on board.

Andrew is hoping for a job with Aflac...however...a job opened up with our competitor Whale Watch boat...hmm?? A spy maybe??:)

Kapule seems to have adjusted well. This outdoor kitty thing is quite new for her, and she will squawk about it for a while. However, today I haven't seen her since this AM, so she may be out exploring her new territory...i hope. I tell you its been more of an adjustment for me...wait til we have kids...I'll be a nervous wreck! Mom and Dad, don't know how you did it!

Speaking of mom and dad, my folks and Trevor show up in 16 days! They'll be spending 11 days with us on the Big Island...and I may or may not have a surprised up my sleeve for them:)

We are moving...again!

Well, as always a lot has happened in the past few weeks. Time flew by, and I didn't realize that 3 weeks had passed since my last post. Yes, David and I are still alive and well, just continuing to live this adventure called...LIFE.

So, as stated in the title, we are moving...again. This will be our 6th place to have lived since we moved to Hawaii. Just call us house-hoppers. From our last move, almost everything is still in boxes since we knew it was only going to be a temporary place. We have signed a 6 month lease (with potential for a year), and are moving into a 3 bedroom house in an area called Waikoloa on the Big Island. My cousin/sister and her hubby will be moving here on the 30th of Nov, and we'll be sharing the house with them. A new chapter in life for both couples, and a chapter that we are very much looking forward to. Haley and I always talked about living together, we just didn't know it would be with our husbands...in Hawaii...working on a whale watching and dolphin swim adventure boat...Wow, God is good!

So come visit!! We'll have an extra room.

Nothing too new to report work wise. David and I are both continuing to love our jobs and God is stretching us to be management material:)

My folks come to visit in 4 weeks along with my brother, a Senior at Notre Dame btw. Looking to go to Law school after college. It will be great to have a lawyer in the family.

Haven't kited in about 3 weeks. Let's just say there are several grumpy kiters on the Big Island right now. We need some wind. Blow Makani blow!!

David and I had access to a condo for a couple days. We invited our friends, Art and Donna, to come over and spend some time resting and relaxing. What great fellowship. Although this condo is 10 minutes away, it was a great retreat from the "norm" of life.

I am about to finish out my sentencing of a suspended license. *sigh* Can I just say, I am a lucky gal to have such a great hubby. Not once did David complain about taking me to work at 5:30 am, or picking me up after his work and being late to hockey. I tell you, if roles were reversed, I'm sure I wouldn't have been so gracious as he has been. (I'm working on that). I am a very blessed gal!

Trials

Today at church our pastor talked about Trials and God's Discpline out of Hebrews 12:4-11. No one likes to be disciplined, but we see discipline as a form of refinement although, sometimes painful and uncomfortable. God allows trials in our lives, and through the trials, if we let him, He'll make us more like Him. Thankfully, trials are only temporary, and usually the outcome is more of God's blessing in our lives.

As we are a couple months away from the end of the year, I have to think that this year could have been called "David and Kelsey's Year of Trials" as both David and I went through some not so fun stuff. However, we have to trust that God truly disciplines those He loves, and through discipline comes a refinement of character. Last Tuesday, I pleaded "no contest" in my excessive speeding court case. After talking with an attorney who advised me not to make the judge more irritated and that really it was a losing battle, I decided to plead no contest and hope for the best. Well the "best" still consists of a hefty fine, 15 days suspended license, Community Service, and a driving class...not what I had in mind, especially when I have a hard time believing I was going that fast (you should see the car I was driving, can it get up to 88 is the question?). Well anyhoo, what's done is done, and I have to think that this is a trial that God has allowed in my life to refine who I am. I have a pretty amazing husband and some awesome friends who are taxing me around for the next 2 weeks. I tell you, for a pretty independent woman to have to suddenly become dependent...it is a stretching experience for me:) Also for someone who felt invincible to the law and often sped (not 88), finally realized that we do need to honor the law and authority God has established and has learned a valuable lesson, thankfully not at the expense of a life or property... Probably what God had in mind...? But how do you explain trials in someone's life who doesn't know Jesus? Is it an opportunity to come to know and rely on Jesus as Lord and Savior?? Is it another way for God to make it clear that we can't do life on our own?
Thoughts?

Talking in the car on the way to the beach to kiteboard, I asked David if he thinks he has seen the blessings from the trial he went through at the beginning of the year. During that trial I saw a pretty stubborn man come to repentance and make some big changes in his life. Never perfect, he is, however, a pretty different man from the man I saw a year ago. David recalled these blessings current in our lives: favor at work, financial provision, and a happier marriage. Maybe even more blessings to come?

I always hope that after a trial, life will continue on as trial-free. But that's not the God we serve. God disciplines those He loves. Discipline is a form of God's love...ouch! So if God loves us, I guess the discipline will keep on coming...

A SURPRISE

Finally I get to share this with you! For about a month, Christina (david's sister) and family were planning on coming to Hawaii to surprise David. Obviously, I had to keep my mouth shut so not to ruin the surprise, and I did!
On October 12, I got David to the airport. I told him I needed to pick up something for Casey (my boss). Little did he know, he was about to be shocked. The "something" I picked up was a car seat, and when he got out of the car to help me put it in the backseat, there was Bella, Pablo and Christina standing there. I've never seen him so surprised!
We went wakeboarding on the Pacific Ocean, spent lots of time at the beach, went to a coffee farm, visited with some awesome Hilo friends, and ate yummy food...it was a very packed 6 days! We loved spending time with them, and were so thankful they could make the trip over with a little 15 month old. I tell ya, little Bella stole our hearts. What a precious little girl as you can probably see from the pictures. Bella loved the water (takes after her aunty), and at 15 months old attempted to body board in some medium size waves with dad. She loved every minute of it. I think she'll be a kiteboarder someday:)

Well, now we are back to routine. The boat is back in the water, however, I'm praying the phones ring a bit more.
I have my "trial" for October 25. I've been advised by an attorney to plead guilty. A tough decision for me since I don't believe I was going that speed, but since I don't feel like paying 3000 dollars for an attorney...its a lose situation at court. Going to trial will only irritate the judge, pleading guilty, may allow me to get the minimum charges. All I have to say, I'm glad I have Jesus as my attorney at the Ultimate trial, Judgement Day. To stand before God and give an account for my life without Jesus by my side...now that's scary. I would appreciate prayers of peace.

Haley and Andrew are moving out here in November. David and I are starting to look for 3 bedroom homes that allow a kitty cat. I also found out, Rachael Scribner, a friend from high school is moving to Kona to be a leader at YWAM. Wow, God is good!! Please help us pray for the ideal house in the ideal location (I have no idea, but He does)

So as many of you know or have experienced, I've been on a big sales kick selling the Big Island. I believe the Big Island is a special place and have encouraged many people to pray about moving here (either temporary to give it a shot, or more permanent). Well we found out this past week that my cousin (pretty much sister) and her husband are taking a leap of faith and moving out here for a year. They bought their one way tickets ( for about $315, an amazing deal) and are going to call the Big Island home for a year. I'm so proud of them as I watch them take this crazy step in life. There's a lot not figured out, but they believe God will bless their year here with incredible provision, and I can't wait to see Him provide! (Their picture is above). So November 30 we have housemates...and are currently looking for a house to complete the picture. I tell ya, housing on the Big Island is a lot more affordable shared, now its just finding that perfect home:)

Anyhoo, pretty exciting news. Just thought I'd share:)

A legal battle

First and foremost, could you all be praying for David's Aunt Tracy. They have found a hole in her lungs and she has been in the ICU for a couple days.

Well, I've been holding off writing this for a couple months because I'd thought I would have a whole story to tell you with good news at the end. Instead, I'm still in the midst of it and humbly needing your prayers.
Where do I begin?
Back in July I got pulled over for speeding. When the cop asked me if I was speeding, I admitted that I was.( I was going no more than 15 over...which yikes...is a lot). He then proceeded to tell me that he clocked me going over 33 mph over the speed limit (putting me at 88 in a 55mph zone). The accusation is pretty crazy as the car I was driving would literally be shaking at 88, there was heavy traffic and I was following another vehicle (who must have been going 88 too and never touched his brakes when he passed the cop) However, this in hawaii, is not just a speeding incident...this is a BIG DEAL, in which I now have gone to court twice. It's up there with a DUI... What's at risk? Besides a heavy fine, a 30 day suspended license, and either 36 hours of community or even jail time, (can you imagine me going to jail? Ok, well, let's not even go there for some of you:) it also goes on my record as a petty misdemeanor. Needless to say, this has been stressing me out. I countered a plea bargain today with the state prosecutor, which failed, so I am going to trial on October 25 at 2:30pm. I have given away my right to an attorney (a financial move, hopefully not a dumb one) because I could not qualify for a Public Defendent (and actually probably don't want one after watching him at work in the court room) and other Attorneys are super costly. If I lose the case I don't want the cost of an attorney plus all the other fines and fees attached. So I'm on my own, for now but seeking more legal counsel. In reality its the cop's word against my word with all the other legal mumbo jumbo in between. I've done my research in what the state prosecutor needs to prove so to find me guilty beyond reasonable doubt.
So to find the "good" in "God works out everything for the good of those who love the Lord and are called according to his purpose" I'm still not sure. I hope to have great news that the case was dismissed after my trial on Oct 25, but I'm also ready for the worst of news (do you think I look good in orange?).
So I am asking my fellow brother and sisters to join me in prayer. I won't have a jury, I just have to convince a really tough judge (who has a reputation of being very egotistical). I feel like the odds are against me, but I have to think I have a God that is for me.

Fall is here, my mainland trip

Aloha friends and family (who I just saw:)

I apologize for the long delay in writing the latest blog. As many of you know, I did indeed go to the mainland for 2 weeks to see family and friends. I tell you, two weeks can go very very fast. We dry docked the boat, and David was such a awesome hubby to let me go 2 weeks to Colorado and Indiana without him. I was sad he couldn't go, but thankful he could work and take care of our kitty cat (which by the way, in the two weeks that I've been gone, has forgotten about me so it seems. She now has a ho-hum attitude around me:)

While on the mainland I was able to see a lot of family which was great and just spend time in beautiful Colorado. It was wonderful to see Mom, Dad, Grandmothers, Aunts Uncles, family-in laws:), and my adorable little niece Bella (Pablo and Christina are doing an awesome job as parents). I also loved seeing my cousin/sister Haley and cousin in law/brother in law Andrew. Haley and I were able to spend a lot of time together, which was so special and much needed. In high school, Haley and I, who were once really close, seemed to live in separate worlds. Thankfully, since college and especially since being married, God has been able to bring our worlds back together again, and she truly is a sister to me. I loved seeing and hearing what God was doing in her and Andrew's lives. Haley even talked me into putting feathers in my hair. Who knew that feathers was a fashion, not in Hawaii...yet. Overall, a lot of decisions to be made in the near future, and I'm excited to see what God will do:)

Another gem on my trip was to stay with Dani and Ryan during our stay in Indiana. Dani, one of my amazing friends in college and has been an amazing friend since college... even got to visit us in June, was one of my bridesmaids back in 2009. She and Ryan are now working at the same Christian school in Indiana, and I am so happy for them. Back in May, my folks and I decided to take a 4 day trip to Indiana to see Trevor and help celebrate his 21st birthday. Dani and Ryan so graciously opened up their beautiful home, and let me emphasize beautiful, and let my folks and I crash for the 4 nights. Let me tell you, I sure packed in a lot of seeing people in those 4 days...and for those who I didn't get to see...I'm sorry...my time was so short:( I guess all the more reason to go back and visit. It was so refreshing to see friends and adopted families (Steenbekes). I was so encouraged by my conversations and catching up with people, so thank you for the joy:) It was very much needed. Trevor, no longer my little brother, was incredible in juggling friends, papers, ROTC, us, birthday celebrations, and who knows what else. It was really neat to meet his roomies, guys I hope he can keep in touch with the rest of his life.

Well, I'm back home. It is good to be home, and it is good that Hawaii feels like home. Some prayer requests, we'd appreciate your help in praying God's will in these areas:
-Finding a more home-like place (we have a lot of visitors coming in the next year, and David and I would love to get a place we can host)
-Car situations, we need to sell a car and buy a good gas car in the next month
- Work, for me...! Pray the phones ring once we are back in the water so we can start booking trips.
-Find a church/small group to plug in
-Figure out other ways we can plug into the community here in Kona
-Our marriage- God has always strengthened us in our time apart, but please continue to cover us in your prayers
-2 unspoken prayer requests

Praise:
David's hours were suppose to get cut these past 2 weeks from 40 to 32. However, each week he still seems to be working the 40 and with the raise that came with the promotion- it has been a huge blessing, especially with me mostly out of work for this month. God provides!!

Opportunity to go back to the mainland. I always consider that a blessing

Despite the economy, David and I have jobs and can survive in paradise!:)

Fall just around the corner

Aloha friends and family,
I seem to have a lot of pics of David and the cat, Kapule, sleeping. I guess for a guy who gets up at 4 am needs a nap every now and then.

Just a little update. Most of you have heard about David's promotion. I'm very proud of him, and look forward to seeing the skills and leadership he will develop through this position.

I too am having to learn some leadership skills in my job as well. Although it is easier for me to just do, I've been asked to train our new employees, which has made me step back and re-think all my leadership readings and classes. Although it's not in a ministry setting with a bunch of teenagers, I am learning that one can still use the same skills and ideas. It's been fun as I've been learning a lot in the business world, and really fun when business takes place on the ocean. Now do I get my captain's license is the question?

I am looking forward to being back in Colorado on the 8th of Sept and in Indiana a little after that. Unfortunately, David won't be coming with me. We really felt that he needed to stay because of his new job and the cat. It's a good thing, because it looks like he may be in Hilo training while I'm in Colorado...perfect timing I must say.

My kite ripped about a month ago, and thanks to a fellow kiter from San Diego who volunteered to fix my kite for free, I'm back in the kiting world. It is a very multi-colored kite, but it is working once again which I'm thankful for. Although I was thinking I was becoming an intermediate kiter, I was put in my place quickly by my fellow kiters. So still at the beginning stage, I'm working on toe side kiting and jumps.

Although our life in Hawaii is good, we do miss friends and family. Our hope is to find a community soon over in Kona that can encourage, uplift, and focus us in our faith in Jesus Christ. We are so blessed for our friends and family in Colorado, Indiana, Hilo...now our prayer is Kona. Just because we aren't in "ministry" God can still use our vocations and or recreational activities to love others as Jesus would love them. Please pray for friends in David's and I lives, friends that can keep us focused on Him even in the busyness in life. I was listening to Rob Brendle's sermon on friends...and my heart's desire is to find fellowship like that in our lives now.

Hey everyone! I just wanted to drop by and give and update on how life has been for Kels and I, since I practically never write any blogposts. But I really wanted to today because I have some great news! Recently I applied for a mid-managment level job at my Target store, and after a battery of interviews, I recently found out that I got the job! Its a big promotion for me, coming right after I was able to be promoted after working here for 90 days. I am really excited for this new season of my work! I'll be in charge of a couple of the sections of the store, helping team members learn and develop in their work and serving our guests with the best shopping experience in Kona. There will be some exciting challenges as I go through my training and begin to work in my new postion, but I know that I can get it done! Kels treated me to a wonderful dinner at the Seafood Bar in Kawaihae to celebrate my promotion. She is such an awesome wife like that! It really meant a lot for her to do that for me.

Life is in general going really well for the two of us. Busy as ever, but we have been making time to just relax and spend time chilling with each other (read: zoning out at the end of the day watching our favorite shows online and playing with our cat Kapule). Within a couple weeks Kels will be on the mainland visiting family in Colorado and then to Indiana to see Trevor and hopefully a lot of our Bethel family, while I hold the fort down here in Hawaii. Aloha from the Big Island,
I'm sure you all are more up to speed on the current world economic situation than I am. However, reading a few articles here and there, I've come to the conclusion that Jesus is coming back soon. You may be scratching your head and saying, "Of course Kelsey, we have been hearing that for a while now". That being the case, here's the challenge to all of us. As I was journaling this AM, a thought hit me. All of our lives we have heard that "Jesus is coming back soon", but how many of us are really ready for His return. Now I don't mean "ready" as in we want to travel, or have kids, or live life a little more. I mean "ready" in that our hearts are clean, and we are walking in righteousness and holiness. I believe the church is going to see a time of refinement, of purification. Purification as seen in the Bible are hard times, times that sort the real followers of Jesus from the fakes. Are we ready for some challenging times ahead? Is Jesus really truly our rock? Are we ready for His return?

Well a little update on the Poole life:
David is going through interviews to be a Team Lead at Target (a position of management). Please keep him in your prayers, as this position would be a blessing in many ways for us.

I, Kelsey, have been BUSY on the boat! An absolute huge blessing. We just added a Japanese translator to our crew members, and have been able to host Japanese guests Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. This has been a huge addition and step for the company! We have more expansion ahead. I tell you, I never thought I'd be doing marketing, reservations, and boat crew for a Swim with Dolphin and Whale Watching boat in Hawaii...how crazy is that! God truly does equip us for His desire in our lives.

A sad day for kiting, I ripped my pink kite. I took a hard fall, and my 4 yr old kite split. Thankfully, some new friends volunteered to help fix it, and I hope in a few days I will be seeing my repaired pink kite back up and running! My other kite is in need of a few more repairs too, before it is back up and running...so it has been a slow kiting week needless to say.

I will be back in Colorado in a month, and in Indiana in a Month and a week! Look forward to catching up with friends and family!

David and I had a wonderful anniversary. Thank you for the anniversary wishes. The best anniversary is a simple anniversary: chinese food, red wine, and dark chocolate while watching Andy Griffith shows!

Visitation from the folks

Aloha family and friends,
So sorry it's been a while since you heard from us, we were busy with my parents being here. Yes, that's right, another visit from Momma and Pappa Waliszewski. (They now inherited the names Grandme and Grandpy as they are grandparents of our kitty cat which my mom thinks is pregnant...which would then make them great grandparents at the age of 50 something if indeed a spade kitty can be pregnant with kittens...hmmm...stay tuned).

Well my parent's first day here in Hawaii was quite adventurous, as I brought them out on the boat to swim with dolphins. That day happened to be the day our power steering broke and we were stranded about 20 miles down the coast from our boat harbor. Our 3 hour tour turned out to be about a 5 hour tour as we waited to be rescued from a fellow tour boat. Yes, 17 of us stuck on a 30 ft boat for 3 hours is very interesting. Fortunately, the dolphins decided to hang with us most of the day. To redeem ourselves, we invited all our passengers for another complimentary trip (parents included) and everyone got a spectacular day swimming with the wild dolphins.

David was excited to have my folks her for many reasons, one being that he could eat again. We feel so blessed when they come to visit, as we do get to go out to eat a little more than usual. Instead of mac and cheese, or spam musubi...David and I were treated to yummy meals:) It was a special treat.

And yes, they did get to see me kite. I actually had one of my best kiting days while they were here, and was really excited they could be a part of that day:) Ok, dad...your next...

David and I are coming up on 2 years being married!! YAY! This past year has been a tough year, but God is faithful and has seen us through the thick and thin. And right behind that is my bday...yay! I love August:)

Well it's been a busy week. We are all sold out on trips for the rest of the week...whew!
Praise God. Be praying for David, he is being looked at for a leadership role at Target...what a blessing that would be!

Can't wait to hear from my brother who has been at boot camp all month. Trevor-I'm proud of you!!

We are like proud parents, always posting pictures of their kids, however our kid is a pussy cat. So bear with us as we continue to post different poses of Kapule. (Dani and Ryan, we now know what you mean with an animal being like your child). We keep telling her that Grandma and Grandpa are coming out to visit (I'm not sure how thrilled my parents are to be grandparents of a kitty, but they are since Kapule is the first child-like thing in our lives). So starting next Sunday, my folks will get to meet the one and only- pudgy-cuddly-whiny Kapule.

This week has been very busy as I completed my 30 hour substitute training certification course. My schedule consisted of work for 6+ hours, kite, come home, eat something and love on the kitty (maybe see my husband:), and head to the local high school to sit in class for almost 4 hours. Needless to say, I was exhausted and ready for it to be over. If I pass my test tomorrow (a supposedly 3 hour test) then I become a certified sub in the state of Hawaii (new credentials since Hawaii's education system is lacking and they needed government grants). Although I love my job on the boat, I don't want to give up on working with teens, so I decided that subbing would be a good fall back when the tourist season is slow.

Randomly, I will throw in here that David is in the process of doing his first oil change EVER! At the age of 24, he now, with the help of his amazing father over the phone, is hopefully going to start his career of Poole car maintenance:) I can only hope. Car repairs are expensive, especially in Hawaii!

Well David has been averaging 35 hours a week, a huge blessing. He now also does cashier work at Target too. Broadening his positions at Target, a very good thing I believe. He is kinda starting to pick up running again...and did dive a good deal yesterday!

I continue to stay pretty busy on the boat. I have such a blast meeting a bunch of new people every day. And I really enjoy the captain and girls I work with...it is nice to look forward to going to work. Your prayers are appreciated as I hope to continue to help generate more business for this company, Adventure X Rafting, than from past years, but I know I can't do it alone. It will only be through the grace and love of Jesus. He is the only reason I have this job...I mean who knew meeting the captain at the beach randomly, we'd be living in Kona and doing what we are doing...actually it was because of Him we are even in Hawaii...although it has been quite a journey thus far. One I hope we don't have to repeat for a long long time!

I'll be back in Colorado in a couple months, looking forward to catching up with family and friends...then yes, I will be heading to Mishawaka, In. So all ya'll who are in the area, let's plan a get together!! Unfortunately, I think David has to stay and work...but we are still looking into it.

I've been watching a lot of my girls from RAing at Bethel, getting married! Congrats to those who are or are getting married this summer! And a random comment: but for those who aren't...keep praying for your prince charming...there's no rush!! God will bring him in His perfect timing.

Just today I had an awesome phone conversation with Donna, a wonderful friend back in Hilo. She reminded me that God prunes us to produce fruit. Often times we think that fruit comes in the form of bringing people to Jesus. But in reality, what is the fruit God mentions in the Bible? Gal 5:22: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control, right? Well to me that sounds pretty inwardly...therefore the fruit is becoming inwardly transformed to the likeness of Jesus Christ. So...i can't believe I'm going to say this...but bring on the pruning. But we can only be pruned, if we are plugged into the vine which is Jesus Christ. Without Him, I sure wouldn't have a lot of hope...and I'm so thankful to have Jesus in my life!

Here I've been telling you all that I've spent long hours at the beach learning how to kiteboard. Well, my wonderful hubby did take footage today, and I now have a little something to show you...So please enjoy this short video of Kelsey kiteboarding (btw, I'm in the Pink kite).

I also posted a pic of our kitty. We have renamed our cat Kapule which means from the prayer. In short, our pussy cat was an answer to prayer. Our God even cares about the little things like a rat problem:) Kapule, I may have mentioned before is part dog. She crawls into bed with us and snuggles next to mainly me. She follows me all around the house, and she really enjoys having a conversation of meows. She truly owns the place, and will tell us when she is hungry, wants attention, or needs to be petted. So far, no rats...she's a keeper.

God has been so good. This week we had full boats loads of 16-19 pax 6 out of the 7 days this week. I feel so blessed, and believe God is piecing together the trips so perfectly. David worked for me today, as I am taking a certification course to be a Substitute Teacher in the state of Hawaii. My next couple Saturdays and a few nights along the way I have to complete a 30 hr course...yuck! But it is great to have a hubby that is so willing to help me out. I did ask him, "Does the boat feel like work?". His answer..."no". It truly is such a great job, my office...the ocean!
As for the class, I figured it will be good to have something to fall back on when the tourist season gets a little slow (Sept, first two weeks in December especially).

Currently, David and I have been trying a church here in Hawaii. It's known as the Stone Church and historically was the first church ever built in Hawaii. Please help us pray for God's will in a church. Although we believe in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, we do desire a good Christian fellowship to be encourged and challenged in our walk with Jesus.

Well, looking forward to seeing my folks in 2 weeks from tomorrow!!

what rhymes with rat...cat!!!!

Well, last night God answered our prayer to find a cat to give a good home to (and hopefully chase off/kill the rats). I checked craigslist last night and behold there was a lady looking to give a cat away, and we jumped on the opportunity. So at about 9 pm last night, I brought Amber home. (That's her given name, but that may change. We'll see.) Kelsey and I are already starting to really like her. She has really quickly adapted to our studio which we were really excited about. She is a really mellow and sweet cat, and absolutely LOVES our attention. It has been pretty fun having her here so far, and we are really looking forward to having her around for a long time... :)

Rats!

We have had an infestation of rats, yes rats. These little nasty creatures have decided to join our life in paradise. As unwelcomed as they are, they have entered our home, mind you our very very tiny home, by the dozens. Well, that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but David did kill 4 yesterday, and we found one today. YUCK!! David wanted me to mention that he wrestled down and killed 7 rats Samson-style by himself:)
We have tried the poison, and although working slowly, doesn't seem to be solving the problem. So what's our plan B, you ask? CAT. We are praying for a cat that needs a good home and comes with all the gadgets (litter box and such)...and hopefully is an excellent rat killer.

David has had to work night shifts Monday-Thursday, so I was left alone when these sneaky creatures invaded. Needless to say I did not get much sleep, as I slept with one eye open most of the night. So would you join us in prayer for a cat. We need God's perfect rat killer.

This week has been so busy with work, praise God! And already Monday-Friday is almost fully booked with only a couple seats available. We can now start booking our afternoon trips!! Well, maybe, because that does interfere with kiting. And speaking of kiting, I seem to be going out everyday and my sessions (riding time) is getting longer and longer wind permitting. Every time I go out I thank God for giving me this time to follow my dream.

Well your prayers are appreciated. We are in a season of season God's provision and faithfulness, despite this rat problem:)

Whew! What an incredible but busy week!

Dani and Ryan (roomie from college and her hubby) came to visit. She and I both did the internship in Hilo, HI, back in 2007, and this was her first time being back since then. We had such a great time catching up with them, and also spent some very special time with our Hilo friends too. From waterfalls, lychee picking, beach, swimming with dolphins, and lots of eating...we had such a wonderful week.

David and I, during that time, got an increase in work hours. So needless to say we were juggling a lot, but God gave us the grace, strength and sleep that we needed to make each day so very memorable with these special people.

Umauma Zip Line

Aloha family and friends,

I apologize for not having written for a while. Time seems to fly by. Well, can you believe it is already June? I sure can't.

Adventure X Rafting seems to keep me busy. Not only am I working boat crew, but I'm doing the reservations and marketing. We've had some great trips and interaction with the dolphins. I think the best day of the season was Saturday. There were over 100 dolphins just chilling next to our boat. Our guests were able to spend over an hour in the water with them. They were swimming all around us, underneath us, and even next to us. I was able to get in the water and try to get some underwater camera shots, we'll see how those turn out. On Sunday, David and I and the captain and his wife went to Umauma Experience to go Zip lining. We have worked out a referral partnership, and are looking forward to the opportunity to generate business for one another. I also will be working for them (the zipline company) as a subcontractor for sales on the west side of the island. God is good!

David seems to be enjoying his job at Target. He really likes the people he works with, and the 4 am morning don't seem to be so bad:) Although he is like a Zombie leaving the house (I'm learning he doesn't function well...yet...that early in the morning). His hours seem to be increasing, and he has been told he is on track to become some sort of leader in the store within a year.

We've really enjoyed going to church Thursday nights at the community night at YWAM (University of the Nations). Our hope is to get plugged in soon to a group of Christian folks...we miss the fellowship.

Speaking of fellowship, we are so looking forward to Dani and Ryan coming out on Friday! Dani was my roomie in college, she and I did the internship in Hilo back in 2007 and became attached at the hip:) She is a wonderful friend to me, and I am so looking forward to spending time with them for a little over a week. We'll be staying on the Hilo side, house sitting for the Harris's (horses, cows, goats, dogs, and cats...oh and a bunny). We are also excited to see our Hilo friends, and hopefully catch up with many of them.

Why is it that summer seems so long in getting here, and once it is here, you can't seem to slow it down. I hope you find rest and relaxation this summer...and my challenge to you...go do something you have never done before:)

Oh, and by the way, I reached a breakthrough in kiteboarding. I spent over an hour kiteboarding...I guess I'm officially a kiter:)

Yesterday was a pretty depressing day for David and I. At about 5:00am (David was already at work) I hear this really loud dog fight. I run out to see Alicia and another brown dog going at it (we believe probably an Alpha female thing). Another tenant on the property got them to stop, and Alicia came crawling back to our front porch with a ripped ear, and bites all over her. She was pretty bloody. The other dog seemed fine.
Since we are only renters, and Alicia was a stray when we moved in, I thought it best to go seek peace from the landlords. Although we love Alicia, we didn't want to ruin any neighborly relations in the process of restoring health to this dog. Our landlords expressed their desire for her to go to the humane society. Although just the thought of that broke my heart, I knew by looking at her pretty bloodied and really thin (although we were feeding her 3 times a day) that was probably the best thing for her.
So yesterday we loaded her up and David drove her to the humane society. They assured us that they would do everything possible to get her back to good health and find her a good home. I tell you, we'd adopt that dog in a heartbeat if we could. Although she probably has a past of abuse and neglect, when David and I reached out to love her and care for her needs she was the most loyal dog we've ever seen. It takes her a while to warm up to someone, she has major trust issues, and just wants to bolt when someone she doesn't know gets within 5 feet of her, but once she warms up, she is such a good companion and so loyal.
So why did God put her in our life for 2 weeks and then take her away? I don't know. But if we hadn't built that trust with her 2 weeks ago, she would still be a starving stray on the street... and she wouldn't have been able to get the help she needed after that dog fight yesterday. So if our role was to just get her to a place where she could get the help she needs and find a home that will love her...well I guess our job is done, as much as we'd love to be that home for her.

Gosh, who knew we could get so attached in 2 weeks. Once again life doesn't make sense, but we have to think that God has a bigger plan.

Our doggie...kinda

Her name is Alicia, and she found us. As I was jogging a couple weeks ago, I came across this dog. One of the plumeria farmers said that she was probably driven here and abandoned, that would explain why this dog is skin and bones. At the beginning she would follow me from a distance, but if I made any attempt to come near her she would run away. Probably abuse, she doesn't trust anyone, and therefore no one has been able to help her. I noticed that she was getting skinnier and probably had gone days without water (it's so hot and dry here in Kona). So I began taking a cup of water and a little bit of food and setting it on the ground and walking away. From a distance, I observed her drinking and eating. Slowly I began to get a little closer to her, finally she would approach me on her terms...but then run away. I was just patient, til just a couple of days ago she gladly runs to me, tail wagging, and just absorbs the attention. Now we are working on her and David. When I'm around she is ok with David (as you see in the picture). If I'm not around, she barks at him and then runs away...we are working on this. But for now, I've experienced a true bond with her...and I believe I have made a friend for life. Is she our dog? No...because no one knows where she came from. She could be lost, she could be abandoned, she could just be a wanderer...but she is starving...and for now I will gladly receive a dog's love and try to put some meat on her so she doesn't starve.

The other dogs you see in this picture are dogs on the plumeria farm. They each have their own personality...and it's just great to be around canine love again.

Why did we name her Alicia? Well I had a friend in college I watched come from a very difficult life, find the love and care of Jesus Christ, and each day became stronger and stronger and overcame some very difficult obstacles in her life through Christ's love (although life still brought her hardships). I believe that's the story of this dog too. I believe this dog has a difficult past, but through our love and care she is going to get stronger and stronger and hopefully overcome some trust issues in her life too.

Friday the 13th special update

Well, the reason that this blog post is so special is because it is David that is writing it! Yes, I know, I decided to add my voice to the blog for a very special reason, and that is to let you know how awesome my Friday the 13th has been. It's my birthday, and there have been some really cool things that have been popping up in my life.

First of all, I want to say thanks to everyone who sent me letters and cards for my birthday. The other day I checked up on the blog to see how it was going, and saw what Kelsey wrote, asking people to send things notes to encourage me. It was such a huge blessing when I started to get them! I cannot thank you all enough. It was super awesome that you guys did that and I am blown away by your kindness towards me.

Secondly, this week I found out about a men's pick-up roller hockey league. Many of you may not know this about me, but I played roller hockey from a really young age until middle school (I think it was the end of my seventh grade year). I've always loved hockey, but never thought that I'd be able to play in Hawaii, and now I am! It was a blast getting back on skates and playing again. It is going to be a regular part of my life now twice a week.

Last night Kelsey and I celebrated my birthday at Outback steakhouse. It was a huge treat to enjoy a wonderful dinner with my wife, talking about the things that God has been doing in our lives and looking ahead to some goals, dreams and thoughts about our future. It's been really comforting to learn, by tried and true experience lately, to be able to trust God more with our future that I ever knew that I would need to. It's been an awesome time growing in Christ, though not always the most fun. However I am confident in Jesus that it is the very best thing for me, and that He is providing in amazing ways! (More on that in a bit)

Today I got to help out on the boat for Adventure X Rafting with Kels and Captain Casey. It was a huge privilege to be able to help them and the guests today, and I was able to jump in with the guests and swim with the wild dolphins. They are absolutely stunning creatures! We found a pod of about 40 dolphins today. I was trying to interact with them and help the dolphins feel comfortable with a group of 18 humans clumsily moving through the water, and boy they sure decided to like us and hang with us today! Four different times I dove down about 10-15 feet and kinda spun around to invite them to play with us. All four time I would have dolphins surround me (usually three) and kind of corkscrew around my and play near me an a couple guests. (it was almost like they were playing ring around the rosie around me, and instead of falling down they would swim away. It was really cool though!) The last time I did, four dolphins surrounded me and played around. One was so close that his tail bumped into the back of my head as he passed by me! It was such a cool trip! It made me more grateful than ever that we have a wonderful, creative Creator who made these creatures so that we could experience them in this way! I am going to help out on the boat again tomorrow, which will be nice because I'll know how to better be able to help serve Captain Casey, Kels and the guests with the trip tomorrow because of what I learned today!

The last bit of update is that I start my new job at Target this next week! My orientation is on Tuesday, so I'll be finding out all my hours and a better description of my job then. It is such a blessing to get a job with a stable company in this crazy economy, and I see where God was waiting to provide on my behalf. It was hard to move to the Kona side because I didn't have a job lined up yet, but within a week of moving over here I got the Target job! Sometimes in life we need to take that leap of faith, and I sure did!

Just an update that David did get a job at Target over on the Kona side! A huge answer to prayer... Some other cool things happened this week...call or email if you want details":)

David was also able to transfer his Hilo security job over to the Kona side and will be a temp/ fill in / sub (whatever word you would like to call it) in security as well. It's a step in the right direction.

It was a busy day for us today. Last night we stayed with our wonderful friends Art and Donna where we enjoyed a fabulous soup and encouraging conversation. We stayed overnight and went to church at HMC today, attended a baby shower for our friends Chris and Heather, and met some awesome families at the Hapuna beach. Whew! Been a busy day. I even made it to Costco for muffins for our breakfast this week. (It's fabulous being 2.5 miles away from Costco)

Hey family and friends,
We are Kailua-Kona residents now! Here are the promised pictures. So if you are flying to visit us, we are literally a mile away from the Kona airport.

We are getting used to our little Kona cabin. It is small, but I believe this time will be a gem in our lives.

David is transferring his job from Hilo to Kona as security guard, but will be back to working nights again. He is still applying for other jobs.

For me, we will be back in the H2O May 12th!! Woo hoo!! So coming Thursday, I'll be going around to hotel concierge and let them know we are back in business and handing out our new fancy flyer! Right now, I'm beach bumming it (and doing a little work to get ready for this new season). Had a great day of kiting today.

Not sure what God is up to, but taking our friend's advice, we are seizing the day! If we are living in the future, we can't enjoy the present. My friends, let's enjoy the present whatever trial or joy it is! God is still God, and He loves us very much!

SUP stands for Stand up Paddleboarding- a new sport I have fallen in love with. A little easier than kiteboarding, this sport requires patience and balance. This past weekend, David and I camped over in Kona. After work on Friday (on the boat) my boss let me take the new Stand up Paddle board for the day to practice and have fun. It is so relaxing to just cruise around the water, looking at the coral reefs below, and thanking God for his creativity.

Unfortunately, I've not been on the boat in a while. Friday we had a terrific day swimming with the dolphins and snorkeling with Manta Rays. On the way back we hit something, and our engines died. Thankfully, we had such a great group of folks on board, especially since we had to get towed in. So the boat is in repair, at least it's the slow tourist season. David was suppose to work with me on Saturday, what would have been his first time out on the boat doing the dolphin swim, but despite the craziness, we still had a great time in Kona. We even met up with a few families from the church and just fried on the beach. (Yes, fried. We all came back looking nice and toasty, even after several applications of sunscreen).

I'm really starting to get the hang of kiteboarding. I am so thankful of getting to do this life long dream and having a supportive hubby. It looks like we are going to move to Kona for at least the summer. We found an even smaller place than what we are living in now, but I think it will do. The way I see it, we are either going to be working and/or living at the beach. All we need is a place to store our things, a bed to sleep in, and food to eat. I think this small little studio will be just that until we can figure out what we are suppose to do. Let's just say, any house we get after this we are going to be REALLY thankful for...I'm sure it's going to be one of those stories we tell our kids someday..."Well kids, your dad and I lived in..." David keeps applying to jobs in Hilo and in Kona, we are praying something opens up soon! I guess we are taking a step of faith in this move....

So just a funny but also gross story. Reader discretion advised: We were bombarded by cockroaches last night. It was disgusting! I don't know why they all decided to come out at once but we had like 5 in the kitchen and 2 flying around as we were trying to go to bed. It gives me shivers just thinking about them...and they were huge...I have a fearless husband who is willing to sacrifice sleep for a wife who says "Honey, I hear another one...can you kill it". Hopefully, not that many cockroaches in Kona.

David is no longer working graveyard shifts, but his hours have been cut. He works 12 hr day shifts Wednesday and Thursday. I continue to work in SPED, when I'm not working on the boat.

I believe we have some visitors coming this summer. Some possible friends from FFI, Dani and Ryan McAfee, and maybe even some family.

Seasons of life

Hmmm...nothing like a thunderstorm. Currently, I have soup cooking in the crockpot, dishes done, and I'm all snuggled on the couch enjoying the flash, crack, and boom of the thunder and lightening display here in Hilo. Needless to say, it's relaxing. Although, it does make me miss the Colorado thunder and lightening shows over the plains. What beauty!

A little shout out to my mom, Happy Birthday mom! What an inspirational woman you are to me. Thank you for all your love, encouragement and support. I hope dad treats you special today, above and beyond a "normal" day. I wish I could be there! Carmel Frapaccino? Anyhoo...Love you so much, you are the best mom in the world!

An update on our lives. This past Thursday we moved out of our 3 bedroom house into a friend's ohana house (1 bedroom/bath/kitchen and living area). It was sad, but we knew that the house was too big for just the two of us. Working with teenagers, it was perfect, but for the two of us it required a lot more cleaning than I had time for. So, David and I have titled this season of our lives as "Transitional". We are only able to stay in this ohana for the month of April (rent in exchange for cleaning which has been such a blessing). But that leaves us not knowing what to do come May...the story of our lives lately. So your prayers are appreciated.

David is still a night security guard every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night. He's been applying other places, but nothing seems to be working out. We are just glad for his employment. We are praying about another youth pastoring opportunity on Oahu, but we need confirmation from God if it is his will. It would break our hearts to leave this island, and we are unsure if we are ready for such an endeavor.

I am staying busy as always, and loving most of it. With the boating opportunity, my job has recently increased. I continue to work on the boat, and now do reservations and sales calls which I love. This past Monday, the gal who I split the job with and I went around to some of the hotels meeting sales agents and letting them know that our whale watching season ended and we are now launching into the Swim with the Wild dolphin season. We did a trip this past Sunday, which was such a blast. Although I had to miss church, I loved being in God's creation and was singing His praises while enjoying a wonderful boating trip and seeing the beautiful whales and dolphins that he made for our enjoyment. When I'm not doing boating stuff, I do continue to work in the classroom providing one on one teaching to children with autism.

Although not official youth pastors, David and I continue to have times of great fellowship with some of the teens. We are so honored to be a part of their lives and witness the cool things God is doing in them.

Tonight, we head to Art and Donna's house for our weekly night of Survivor. Really, it's just an excuse to hang out with good friends and talk about Jesus.

Kiting is going well. I've had the guys working with me on self-launching and self- landing a 14 meter kite...that's a lot of power if anything goes wrong, but I've had an excellent coaching staff:)

God is working in our marriage in incredible ways. Sheree, one of my woman mentors, gave me a book called Help Meet, talking a lot about our role as woman and wife. David and I also sat down and listened to Troy and Kim Meeder on FamilyTalk with Dr. Dobson, and was very encouraged by their testimony.

My husband has literally shocked me as I have come home to clean dishes, letters on my pillow, a disinfected bathroom, repairs on the car, running, and jobs applications done. To top it all off I was craving chocolate today, and the next thing I knew he had a chocolate bar from 7-11 in my hands. I don't know what has gotten into my husband, but I love it and never want it to change. He's inspiring me to become a better and more Holy Spirit transformed person and is definately setting a standard in our marriage!

Spring is in the air...literally (ref to kiteboarding)

These pictures are from our spring break adventures. We were treated to a night in a beautiful hotel called the Hapuna Prince (see pics above) that was right on the beach: a beach we do regularly attend, just not as hotel guests. It was quite amusing pulling into this grande hotel in our little beach-mobile that rattles, it drew quite the looks from the valet parking attendants, but it led to some good family laughs. Just picture the modern day Beverly Hillbillies but just in Kona, Hawaii. The other family laugh we had was when we dropped my folks off at the "airport" to catch a Pacific Wings flight to Maui so they could celebrate their 32nd anniversary that was on March 17. Although my dad got a great deal on tickets ($33 each way) little did he know how tiny of a plane they would be flying. Let me just say that the pilot was also the front desk check in person, gate attendant, baggage handler, flight attendant, and again pilot (with a question mark) who looked like he was about Trevor's age. Good deal or not, we were a little unsure if they would even make it to Maui (to get to the "gate" they had to tromp through some bushes...that's how nervous we were). But many laughs later, we can happily report they are enjoying their time on the beautiful sandy beaches of Maui.

It was great to have family here, even for a short time. My folks were able to cheer us to the finish line of my fourth half marathon in less than 2 years (David's 3rd). Although, after mile 8, I struggled with knee issues which I will be getting checked out. Just hours before, my folks were able to see me attempt to kiteboard. In the past week, I've been able to go out 4 times. Practice makes perfect, and I am starting to ride (although yesterday, during low tide, I did smash into a reef and am suffering from minor cuts and bruises). Unfortunately no whale watching due to high winds up to 69mph gusts.

Well, we did get word that we will have the opportunity to rent a house on the West side. However, because it's the west side, it is out of our price range. It's a very beautiful home with stunning ocean views. We are looking to do some work on it in exchange for rent, however our hope is to find a Christian person or couple who would consider being our house-mates and could also do work in exchange for rent. Our two options are: 1) having a person or couple to rent a room for $600 keeping the 3rd bedroom open for visitors/guests or 2) getting two people to rent the 2 other bedrooms at $300/month. The community part would be the living area and kitchen...everything else is private, and being on that side most likely you'll be spending your time working or at the beach:) So if God is tugging on your heart about Hawaii...keep us in mind.

PS. The title above is reference to kiteboarding. Spring and summer are the best times to kiteboard because the winds are what they called thermals. It's an exciting time for those of us who chase the wind on the big island.

Post tsunami...it seems to be a yearly thing...

In case you can't read this pizza, I surprised David with a delivery from Pizza Hut that was a pep pizza that spelled out I love you with the pepperoni s.

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging..." Psalm 46: 1-3

Well the good news is, God is still God despite such a horrific event as the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. And in fact, horrific events point to the fact that Jesus is coming...soon! So my encouragement is this: Press into Him and allow Him to become your refuge and strength, no matter what situation you are facing.

Well, as I alluded to in the last blog, David has a job. He is officially a "rent-a-cop" (as he came home saying). But really, he is a security guard and works 3 12 hour graveyard shifts (6pm-6am). I know many of us would find that shift to be that of torture, but my husband, being the night owl that he is, seems to be doing well, so far. Because he watches vacant buildings (now you are really confused...) he is allowed to read. Going back to the job description, he patrols around these vacant buildings every so often so nothing out of the ordinary happens (vandalism, mischief, loitering, etc.). Despite a long and treacherous 12 hours, David is attempting to learn Spanish and has read a book a night. In fact, there was one book called UNBROKEN which he spent his whole shift reading. And when I got up that morning, I found him on the couch still reading that same book. You know it must be a good book when one is still reading after a 12 hour night shift. It has the Poole stamp of approval.

As for me, I have no such thing as a routine/schedule any more. Some days I'm in Kona working the boat (which my day begins at 4am), and some days I'm working in the schools, and some days I have off because either bad weather or no student...so each day has me guessing. It's definitely out of my comfort zone, since I'm one that thrives off of a routine.

As for our lives, we have no idea what the future holds. We are planning on staying in Hawaii through the summer- Lord-willing, but have no idea what's after that. Our hearts are to stay here for a little longer, but as always we are holding our desires loosely as we seek His will for our lives. Needless to say, I do feel stuck and direction-less, but hope that all changes quickly.

We are looking forward to my folks coming out here Saturday for their 5th visit since we've been here (I believe you can call this their second home:). I'm hoping to take them whale watching on Monday. And they'll be here to either cheer us on to the finish line or scraping us off the pavement as we look to complete the Hilo half-marathon this Sunday. Your prayers are appreciated.

Well, today is one of those days off, better go find something to do:)

Tsunami!

Thanks for the phone calls, emails and facebook messages. We are fine. Tsunami sirens started going off around 11:00 last night. We are out of the tsunami zone, but barely. There was no knock on the door to evacuate, so I figured we'd be fine. David was actually at work...yes...work...he is a security guard and works nights...and was much closer to the beach than me. They didn't send him home, so I figured the wave wasn't going to be as big as they thought. It did some damage to the west side of the islands. I was actually looking at some facebook pictures from the Kona area, and the damage is more significant than thought. I guess Bubba Gump's furniture was seen floating and the Alii Dr. looked a bit disrupted.
Let's all be praying for those in Japan. What a catastrophe!

We love the water...Living Water...we want more

Well as you can tell from the pictures. We have been spending a lot of time on boats. I continue to whale watch and David, today, went on a fishing expedition with some friends. In fact, one of those friends goes by the name, Andrew Staal, and is currently visiting us from Mishawaka, Indiana. He was one of our interns this past summer, and it's been such a joy having him back. Oh, and by the way they caught 2 fish called Ahi or a type of Tuna and their estimated weight is a little less than 20 lbs each. Pretty proud of the boys bringing home the dinner:) As I type this, David's out cutting Ahi steaks. So guess what you have to look forward to Mom and Dad when you all come out here in a couple weeks?:) Poke! (it's a hawaiian dish that is made up of raw chunks of Ahi mixed with soy sauce and garlic/ or other types of seasoning...mmmm...I know your tummy is growling as you read this...haha).

Any news on a job for David, you ask? The answer is unfortunately "no". We need your prayers as he continues this job hunt. It is a scary time for us, but I have to know that God is in control. I continue to work 2 jobs...which I consider a blessing.

I believe God gave me Romans 4:20-21 this week. God is faithful and powerful to stay true to all His promises. Would you believe that with me?

Well, got to get up SUPER early to go whale watching...

Yesterday on the boat we saw 3 whales breach over 30 times. We even saw a triple breach (breach is where this massive animal comes out of the water). Also, saw some cool dolphins:)

Aloha,
I was coming home today, driving from the West side of the island, with the biggest smile on my face. It was one of those smiles that I honestly couldn't wipe off my face, in fact, I couldn't help it. In spite of the tough circumstances that surround us, I was so happy and was feeling so blessed. Things have been tough, I won't lie, but God has truly given me His joy, and honestly I experience it the most being out in his creation and loving on people.

So that part about being in His creation: As most of you know, I have taken another part time job as a crew member for a whale watching and dolphin excursion boat. It's on the other side of the island, and is about 1 1/2 hr drive each direction. But it's so worth the 3 hour car ride. My "training" day we encountered many whales, as well as a pod of spinner dolphins with babies. It was incredible as they swam all around us, jumping and playing. My first real day of work, Valentine's Day, we again saw many more whales and actually were able to hear the whales singing through our boat. The captain, shown in the picture, allowed us (me included) to get into the water (and we are talking like depth of 300+ feet with whales 100 feet away from us) and put our heads under water so we can hear the whales singing. It was incredible. Today, another gorgeous day out on the water, we saw a whale breach 5 times. We believe the whales we were following were a group of males in pursuit of a female. All the activity from the whales was from the males competing for the female's attention. It was like the whale version of The Bachelorette. (ok bad joke, but I know you at least chuckled). The whales have been known to swim under the boat and come right up to the boat in a non-threatening sort of way. They too are curious. A fun fact about whales: The male whales sing but only in the winter birthing/mating months. And each year scientist believe they change their song. Whales from Hawaii, Baja, Mexico, and or Southern California all sing the same song. It's just another cool way to say, "Yep, there is a God and boy is He creative". How else could all the whales be singing the same song in so many different locations, it sure ain't evolution.
**I've posted pics of some of the whale sightings. Some pictures of the fluke (tail). Some are of the side pectoral fin. Some are of the head and some are just of the back of the body. I promise, I'll become a better whale photographer...first day... a little rough. There's also a picture of two puffer fish fighting. I know, they look dead because they are belly up. But we came across them and they were swimming toward each other. Suddenly they locked mouths and began "fighting" I guess? It was so crazy, but fun to watch pufferfish all blown up fighting out in the middle of no where by biting each other on their snouts??? Weird I know.
So what's the work part of my job since I don't just get paid to watch whales? Well we prep the boat in the morning, check guests in, interact with guests, offer them snacks and/or drinks during check in and throughout the 2 1/2 hr. boat ride, and scrub the boat at the end of the day. So yes, I do work too:)

About the loving people: First, we have had some cool opportunities just to get to hang with the students. David finishes his job at the end of February, but our hope is that the students will continue to know that we love them and will be there for them if they ever need us. Again, we had about 20 students over last Friday for Open House with a couple of first time faces. We had such a blast playing games, especially an intense round of Spoons. Just yesterday, we had two of our students come hang out with us late in the evening just to talk about life, get in the Word, and be encouraged. Praise God! We are realizing we don't need a "profession" to love on students. But we are continuing to pray God provides a solid job for David (we are looking into the idea of moving to Kona for the summer and pursuing some of the tourist jobs . Also I can pick up more hours on the boat and hopefully get really good at kite boarding).

Oh...and another cool thing. My boss, is a kiteboarder too (probably got that from the last blog) but he has invited the other 2 girls and their other halfs and a lot of the kiteboarding folks and their spouses on the boat this Friday for a sunset cruise and a evening/night whale watching experience. Can you watch whales at night? We'll see, but he has this cool light that illuminates the water all around us...it will be pretty coolio. God seems to be expanding our circle of influence on the other side of the island. My prayer is that one day all these folks will come to know Jesus as Lord and Savior, and we'll be doing what we do (kiteboarding, whale watching)...for Jesus!.
Ok...back to loving people...Another cool people opportunity is getting to know a lot of the different types of people from all over the world. In my three days of working on the boat I've met people from China, Turkey, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Florida, Washington, California, and Arizona.

And what did we do for Valentine's Day? Well we used a gift card that was given to us back in November to go out to a very nice restaurant...I mean the dress up kine...where David claims he ate the best steak he has ever eaten in his life....:)

Well come one, come all! We have no idea how long we'll be here, but while we are here...come visit!

To do or not to do...that is the question...

Whew! It's been busy folks. But for those who are at the edge of their seats waiting for our next blog, I didn't want to keep you waiting. And there are pictures. The fish you see, that was a Tuesday Night Bible Study dinner. Not too bad...biggest fish David has caught so far. Random fact: This particular fish eats coral and poops sand...weird!

Ok here's the update: Today I went to Kona to apply for jobs. I didn't realize that with hotel opportunities a cover letter and resume just dont cut it. So despite the many hours that I've spent on resumes and cover letters, I had to re-type all the information into their computer system to make it an "official legal document". In the end I made it to 2 hotels, 3 restaurants, and 4 retail stores. But here's the kicker. On my way over I was praying, "God would you just open doors and shut doors, this application process seems so unstable and tedious, would you just help". Well I decided between hotels and restaurants I'd stop by the beach and see if my kiteboarding buddies were there. Well after finding no one there, I was getting into my car when one of the kb guys came walking toward me. Well, I was in my interview get up (collar shirt, nice pants, heels...definately not something you go to the beach wearing) and began explaining the reasoning for my trip to Kona. Right away he said that he'd hire me for his boat crew, he was looking for his third crewman for his whale watching and dolphin trip excursion boat trips. Wow, this opportunity just literally fell into my lap! So now it's just praying and seeking the Lord.

So here's a little call out: Anyone who feels like taking a risk in this adventure called LIFE...give me a ring or email: kelsey.poole09@yahoo.com. David and I are praying about finding another couple or a couple of individuals...christians...who would love to move to Kona (either from Hilo or the mainland) and literally become missional beach bums. What does that mean? Well, we'd live cheap (splitting rent, sharing cars) but our purpose would be to connect with the Kona/Waikaloa community through recreation, jobs, and whatever else and share Jesus...interested...call us.

Please be praying that David would find a job! We need a job with health benefits and full time in Kona! Would you agree with us in prayer?

Not much to update you all on in the Poole adventure. First, for those who have emailed, commented, facebooked,hugged or called...thank you, thank you, thank you for your prayers, encouragement, and support. Indeed it is a rough time, and I'm a true believer that we can't do this thing called life on our own. So mahalo for your love.

David will be finishing his time as youth pastor at the end of February. This will be a key time to transition the students, and set a plan for the youth group to run with an interim youth pastor until they find the next full time guy/gal. Our hearts are to continue to serve and love the teens until God calls us to the next season. Just because you don't have the status of "youth pastor" doesn't mean you can't disciple, encourage, and love teens. With that being said, if you attend a church and there's a need for youth leaders, jump in! There's such a need for Godly people to love and disciple teenagers. Unfortunately, there's such a steady spiritual decline amongst this up and coming generation, that I'm convinced we need more people everywhere who will serve in youth groups all across America. So what are you waiting for...Go, grab your youth pastor and ask where you can plug in. *stepping off soap box*

This past Friday we set a world record in how many people we can fit into our little house. *Drum roll please* 32 teenagers! Yes, despite the news of the resignation that did not keep students from attending our Open House. In fact, our house was bursting at the seams.

God continues to provide sub jobs for me. For two weeks in a row, I've worked Monday-Friday. What a blessing, although I'm exhausted. David and I went cruzing this past Saturday over to Kona, a needed break after all that has happened.We had some good time together, and good conversation. It was good to dream again, although come March we'll need a job for David. If you know of a job, preferably in Hilo, would you please let us know:)

So I know I need to post more pictures. David went night diving after Open House and caught the biggest fish yet...we'll post pictures soon. Currently it's sitting in my freezer with the other waiting-to-be-eaten fish. He speared it as it was sleeping. I told him that was unfair to the fish...he didn't have a chance. I guess the "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" doesn't apply to spearfishing. Anyone craving fish? just give us a hollar.
By the way...it was so good to talk to Jenna Y and Dani Mac this past week. So refreshing! May God continue to lead and guide you in His will. In fact, that goes for every reader reading this blog. May the God of the Universe, who loves YOU so much that He sent His Son to die on the cross for YOU, lead you and guide you into His will for your life and that nothing would be burdensome, but everything would be full of life and freedom (1 John 5). Oh, by the way...His Son ain't dead... in fact...He's alive and we'll see Him soon! Thank you Jesus, for that is my hope every single day.

When I started this blog, I wanted it to be a way for you all to gather insight into our lives. Of course, I wish I could only report all positive things. But that's not reality. And as much as I won't report the gory details for the sake of our privacy (over exagerrated...the gory part...i'll always stick to the privacy part), I do want to share realistically what God is doing in our lives. I do this not for our sake, but for whose I'm undecided. If you are like me, I often feel so alone in trials- like I'm the only one who has or ever will go through ______(fill in the blank). So for those who have gone through, are going through, or will go through trials...this blog is for you. You are not alone! And although our trial may be different...a trial is a trial. I believe Satan wants to isolate us as believers, and fill our minds with shame, depression, insecurity, and doubt, so that we don't truly find the fellowship and support of believers and experience the unity and freedom in Christ.

So all that being said: David resigned this past Friday from the youth ministry at Hilo Missionary Church. Does that mean we are leaving? No. We believe that God called David to step out of professional ministry, with the confirmation of many of our leaders. Our desire is to still serve the kids as youth leaders as the transition for the next youth pastor is being made. So, no, we arent leaving the church, and in fact, we have been blown away by the support and love we have experienced from the majority of the church body. As expected, questions are being asked, conclusions drawn, and sides taken. And here's our response (or God's response):
1 Corinthians 1:10-17
" I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisons among you and that you are perfectly united in mind and thought. My brothers, some from Chloe's household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. What I mean is this: One of you says, "I follow Paul"; another "I follow Apollos"; another "I follow Cephas"; still another "I follow Christ."
Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul? I am thankful that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius so no one can say that you were baptized into my name. For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, no with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be empited of its power."

Simply put, I believe God is saying: Don't focus on leadership, focus on Jesus. And that's our heartbeat. Leadership will come and go, drop the ball, disappoint...but if we focus on Jesus we'll be a unified Body of Christ that won't let Satan have a foothold into the Kingdom of God. So our desire now: Is to walk and talk purposefully bringing unity and focus to Jesus. We know that God has a bigger plan than any of us can imagine. We know that God is in the redeeming business (sidenote: David did not have any moral failure to bring about a resignation, but recognized he had a lot of room to grow in and not at the expense of the youth).
We hold true to the verse (and this verse stands true for anyone who knows Jesus and is going through a tria)l:
Romans 8:28-30
"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified."

When Job went through his trial, his friends counseled him in trying to understand "why". Ultimately, God concludes that He's in control and it was a way for Job to see that God was in control and He's Big enough for any situation. Even the most junk (a Hawaiian expression). And what did God do after Job was refined to the point of understanding that God is in control and so Sovereign that nothing escapes Him...he was blessed.

God is in control! He knows what's best, and we believe this is a refinement for us, our marriage, and our relationships with other people, ultimately drawing us closer to Him.

Apart from Him, there's nothing

Our first week back in Hawaii has been busy as usual. I thought after our trip back to Colorado I needed a vacation, but it hasn't happened yet.

We have hit the ground running. David has much to do in the area of of youth ministry. Still praying for wisdom and guidance in this area. Despite being gone for two weeks, we came back to some eager kids waiting to get some of the small groups and fellowship times going again. Thursday we had about 18 (plus 4 more who will be joining next week) for our "Build" part of the youth group. During this time the students break into Link groups (accountability) where they ask each other deep questions and then go into a "classroom setting" to study either Prayer, Bible, Worldview, or Life (Eph 6) taught by 4 different leaders.
Last night we had our Open House. This is the "Reach" aspect of the youth ministry. We encourage kids to invite their friends in hopes to create a sense of belonging. We had 3 new students come, invited by their friends, along with about 20 of our "old" kids. It was a packed house. With games, food, and fellowship we kept the neighborhood up until almost 10:00 pm. They just didn't want to go home.

I have been getting phone calls left and right asking me to sub. I am almost booked for sub jobs for the month of January, and starting to get calls for February. Praise God! I was able to sub 3 days this week, and took Monday to go enjoy a little kiteboarding. The wind was going about 25mph, and therefore I couldn't fly, but I was able to watch others who had smaller kites fly. Almost 18 kiters out in the water enjoying the strong wind...*sigh* I'm hoping that will be me one day.

Well it's a 3 day weekend for some, with MLK Day on Monday, what are you doing? In the midst of busyness, I pray you find time to quiet your life, quiet your heart and spend some solid time with the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

As David and I were doing devotions we were reading out of Proverbs 15 where is says:
"With love and faithfulness, sin is atoned for. And with the fear of the Lord man avoids evil". What does it mean to you to fear the Lord? Food for thought.

800 dollars in travel vouchers, two meal vouchers, and a night in the San Francisco Double Tree hotel -later, here we are sitting in the airport on our way back home with a lot to reflect on. As most of you know, David and I took some vacation time and travelled back to Colorado for the Holidays and Kelsey Travis (now Lantz)'s wedding. It was a wonderful retreat and great to see friends and family. We spent 3 days celebrating Christmas with each "section" of family. It was so special to see our almost 6 month old niece, Bella Cosette, and watching Pablo and Christina parent. It made David's vacation, when Bella fell asleep on his chest while we were all talking. What a special gift, and we believe God has awesome things in store for that little girl. We also were able to play with my aunt's new little australian shepherd puppy, Nellie. It's like having a 2 year old in the house. The attention that was required for that little ball of fur was unbelievable, but very very worthwhile.

David and I were also able to play a little. We went up with my sister/cousin and her hubby to go snowboarding . With fresh powder and a little sunshine, we had a great time. David and I also took a little adventure to go snowshoeing. What could have been a good time, turned sour due to my idea to take our three dogs. It was quite comical watching David balance snowshoes and a dog as big as a small horse. And I decided I could handle our two rambuncious goldens...hahaha!

*** (Sunday)We are now back in Hilo, awaiting what God has in store for the New Year. We know a challenge lays before us, and our trust is in the Lord. I tell you, I love Hawaii, and I loved seeing the students today. We want what God wants! We covet your prayers and encouragement.

Aloha and Mele Kalikimaka from Hawai'i!

Some of you may have been referred to this blog from our very home made Christmas cards. There is an explanation for the tacky-ness, which I apologize for. In my head, I had this brilliant idea to save money and make our own Christmas postcards. We needed to send out as many as we could, and we were on a budget. So instead of having Walmart photo do it for us in their fanciful and professional way, I decided to buy all the supplies and have David and I make our own in our spare time (haha...spare time:). But unlike our wedding invitations, we did not have 10 hands on deck, and yet we still needed to make mass quantities. After several things went wrong (the white cardstock was too small for the photo, the glue couldn't keep the picture stuck, and the envelopes were the wrong size) we had to creatively come up with an alternative...and walah...that's what showed up in your mailbox:) So despite the childish look, I pray that you understand our heart and that is we love you and hope the best for you this season of celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Humor and modern technology aside, it's neat to set aside and remember the Reason for the season and the gift Jesus was/is to the world. And that my friends is Who our lives were about this past year (and are about) being youth pastors (and our many other roles) in Hilo, HI.

If you want a detailed account of what we were up to this past year, may I recommend reading our past blogs. However, if time is treasured and a recap is more effective, then allow me to share in brief (as brief as I can be) what I, Kelsey, have been up to this past year. (and as a special treat, I have asked my husband to contribute to this Christmas letter too)

As of October 09, I have been working for TIFFE, an agency that specializes in 1 on 1 services to students/adults who have autism. From Jan-June I was doing that full time, as well as volunteering at the church. That became a bit too much, so I decided in August to only substitute. Subbing at the agency, and at a local Christian school, has been such a blessing, and God continues to provide for our every need in such an incredible way.

Our big event this past year was the Colorado Trip which about 20 of our students went on that centered around the Desperation Conference in Colorado Springs. We really felt that God was not calling us on missions this year, but instead wanted to 1) draw students closer to Him 2) ignite a passion in their lives 3) draw students closer to one another and 4) have fun! All four of those goals were accomplished in incredible ways. Eight of our students were baptized the day they got back to Hilo in the ocean, as a proclamation of what God had done in their hearts on the trip. Although the mountain top experience was exciting and exhilarating, we prepared the students for the possible valleys that lay ahead once they returned to real life. Many, including David and I, faced some low valleys. Isn't it something that our enemy wants to try to undo everything God has done, but the good news is that Satan has been defeated and Jesus is victorious!

This summer our family also doubled in size by adding two Bethel interns, Nate and Drew, who lived with us for the entire summer. They were awesome and multiplied our ministry in incredible ways. Needless to say, when they left, they were greatly missed by all!

Going on our second year of marriage, God continues to teach us new and exciting things about Himself using our marriage. Marriage has also been a huge refinement tool in our lives as well, or as David says "rough rough sandpaper" (you guessed it, that's me, I'm the sandpaper:) [ Actually - I have said before that sometimes God has to use the spouse as a metal grinder on us instead of sandpaper - David]

But through the ups and downs, I love David even more that I did on August 1, 2009, when I said those two precious words "I do". I absolutely love His gentle and soft heart, and feel that I'm a very blessed girl to have married such a man!

As for 2011, we have no idea what to expect. We can only imagine the journey ahead. I guess we'll just strap in and hold on tight, because He seems to be taking us on a ride that we'll never forget.

But here we are...here...now in December of 2010...approaching the Christmas season. I'm always reminded of the busyness, stress, money (or lack there of), parties, cookies, friends, family, presents and wonder why do we wait until the Christmas Eve service to finally slow down and reflect on the Reason for the season. Why not start now? When I think of Christmas I think of the gift of Jesus Christ. This gift is not meant to be hoarded, hidden, or forgotten. Instead this gift is meant to be shared. Why not stop and share with someone waiting in the long seasonal lines at Walmart? Maybe we could share with someone who is in financial need? Let's not just let someone go in front of us in line, throw some extra change into the Salvation Army bucket, or donate some cans of food to the Food Pantry, but let's truly share with someone the Reason for the season: that Jesus Christ fully God came in the form of a human baby to grow up and at the age of 33 sacrifice His life on a cross and die so that we could have a relationship with Him. Let's not forget the power of that Reason for the season.

To family, friends, and even strangers who just happened onto this blog, Merry Christmas! May you experience Him in an awesome and real way this New Year, just ask Him and He'll do the rest!

Hello all,

I just wanted to add in to our Christmas letter. It's been an incredibly long time since I have added my voice to this blog, and have been desiring to share with you all. As Kelsey has mentioned, this has been a year with highs and lows, but yet through it all I feel that the Holy Spirit has been leading and has Kelsey and I in a place where we are supposed to be...no matter how things may feel or look on the outside. This has been a year of tremendous growth for me personally and professionally. One of the things that the Lord has been teaching through everything is that He desires to work out every situation for our good - and sometimes the thing that is good is not fun. Throughout the course of this year (and probably the rest of my life) God has been helping me to learn that lesson, so that in every situation I can truly state along with the worship song "Blessed be Your Name".

The Holy Spirit has given us the ability to serve, connect with, lead, support, comfort, and cheer on an amazing group of teenagers, and it is an honor that is not easily forgotten each day. I am so excited to see how God will continue to develop these teens into passionate, Christ-focused disciples throughout the next year! I will truly miss hanging out with our teens while we are back in Colorado visiting family for Christmas [I will, however, love the cold weather and snow. It's sometimes hard feeling "Christmasy" when you are sitting on the beach].

All in all, it has been a good year. We appreciate and desire your prayers [is it ok to covet prayer? if it is then I do] for us and the leaders and teens we work with/serve. We are hoping to be able to see you soon, or at least talk here in the near future. Let's have fun throwing Jesus a party here soon!

plethora of pics

This is a plethora of pictures, all pretty random, but all really awesome! Some are from a diving trip David took with a few of the youth guys and one of our college students. Others are of a monk seal in Kauai relaxing on the beach. I don't know about you, but if I were to be any animal I think I'd pick the monk seal. This seal not only was sunning itself on the white sand, but it had a perimeter roped off not allowing anyone to go near and give it it's space...I wish every time I went to the beach I could claim a large section of beach just to myself with threatening signs not to go near me either:)...Lucky...

There's a picture of green stuff surrounded by foil. That's called lau lau. Yes, for those who are local, your mouth is salivating as we speak. For those not familiar with the Hawaiian foods, you may be gagging in your mouth. This dish is chicken, pork, and/or fish wrapped in taro leaves (which taste like spinach). A Hawaiian favorite, and something I'm still getting used to.
A few more are from Kauai when my uncle Steve and David decided to go boogie boarding in the high surf...a few bruises and scrapes later...I'm happy to say they did manage to make it out alive. Also that's Diane (my dad's cousin) waving to you from an amazing snorkeling beach called Poipu. The last are pictures of the youth girls tping my own house. Please, let me explain before you come to any hasty judgements. Yes, I let the girls tp the inside of MY house, but what you don't know is that David was having a Guy's Night simultaneously and they just happened to be out. Using my own toilet paper, plastic wrap, and furniture, these girls did a fantastic job turning my house into a dump which the boys later came home too. What a great bonding experience. Overall David and I really appreciate living life with the youth in these small ways like Girls Nights and Guys Nights! Lately our message has been for them to grow...and they don't need a youth group or a fun night like these to do that. God's given them everything and simply put it is this:

O- Obey His commands
W- Witness

Kauai trip and Thanksgiving 2010

I'm looking out across the ocean on the amazing island of Kauai, admiring the serene beauty and outstanding creativity of only our Creator. I can only imagine how the psalmists of the Bible felt as they, in the midst of turmoil in their lives, sat in the beauty of God's creation and let the Holy Spirit minister to their needs. When that happens, it seems only natural, to let His transforming peace consume our tired and burdened hearts. I think it's so important to spend time in what He's made (creation) and be still and know that He is God. In my life it's easy to be so caught up in the busyness, our "to do lists", people's expectations, but a small 4 day vacation of just enjoying what He's made can be such medicine to the soul and a remedy to a tired and weary spirit. Needless to say, Kauai has been wonderful.

Thanksgiving Day we flew in to meet my Grandma, her sister and My great aunt Pat, her daughter Diane, and my uncle Steve and Aunt Wendy. We had a wonderful turkey dinner compliments of Safeway. Friday we spent at the beach laying out and attempting to tan and enjoying the water when the sun got too hot. Saturday some of us went to Lihue and did some shopping:) Today we enjoyed going to church. The pastor is one of David and I's peers from Bethel. He and his wife just had a baby, and it was so neat to catch up with them and some of our other friends too. David's roommate, Greg, and his wife Lindy also live here. I enjoyed getting to know them better, and to see David fellowship with an old friend.
We head back tomorrow. In just a few weeks we'll be in Colorado enjoying Christmas with the family. Ohana is a of big importance in Hawaii, and I believe in keeping with that importance even though our family is on the mainland. I hope that family will always be of high importance in our lives.

According to my husband, after Thanksgiving is the time for the Christmas music, so blast that music loud and clear, and let the Christmas season begin. But despite the busyness, let's sit in His creation, and remember His love for us. The reason why we celebrate Christmas in the first place. And, from Pastor Matt's message this morning, let's also remember the reason why He came too!

Aloha,
I'm not sure if there is anything too new to report. Besides sitting in the mall with one of our students for a couple hours as she and a few others await for the Harry Potter movie 17 hours early, or playing cowgirl at one of HMC family's farms while they go on a much needed vacation, or getting ready to go on a fun little Thanksgiving vacation to see family in Kauai, we haven't been up to too much.

For the past few days, David and I have been taking care of a family's farm out in the boonies of Hawaii. David and I truly enjoyed being near animals again (4 horses, 4 goats, 3 dogs, and 3 cats). It was great to be out in nature, enjoying God's creation.

Just a quick thought to share. I was reading a friend's blog and she shared her mission statement or purpose statement. Just the idea of having a mission statement was amazing to me, an individual mission statement. You hear about company's mission statements, but why shouldn't we have a mission statement too as individuals. A mission statement motivates, focuses, reminds, and brings clarity. What would your mission statement be? I'm going to start working on mine.

horsebackriding in November

These are pictures from Monday. I had the privilege of going to the Harris farm to visit with the Harris' and another gal and see the animals and ride the horses. Classy, the horse I'm on, is a new addition to the farm. She reminds me a lot of BJ (stubborn, doesn't want to leave her horse buddies, but gentle and loving). It was a little taste of Colorado. I believe this is the first time I've gone horsebackriding in November:)
I had such a wonderful time of fellowship with the two other ladies. Praise the Lord for such loving friends and awesome and gentle animals:)

So it's a rainy day in Hawaii and I have decided to plant myself at Starbucks and catch up on work and watch my favorite show Chuck. It's been relaxing and much needed. I feel a bit guilty, because while I'm enjoying my "day off", David is out washing cars with students in the rain for a "pledge drive" to raise money for this summer's missions.

So I don't have a lot to "report", except that a truly loved teaching 5th graders for the past 7 school days. My favorite moment while teaching was this:

During Bible class we were talking about the Old Testament books of the Bible. I asked students to turn to the book of Ecclesiastes. One of my students raised his hand, and in all sincerity said "Mrs. Poole, I don't think I have that book" :)

I wanted to share something that I've been learning. One of the women from church gave me This Present Darkness by Frank Peretti to read thinking the story is similar to that of David's and mine since we have been in Hawaii (which I would agree now being half the way through). However, I know it's a fiction book, but I believe Peretti may be on to something in his description of the spirit world. Ephesians 6:12 says, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers and authority of this present darkness." Peretti describes the spiritual world/battle in such depth, but he always emphasizes this point. The good guys, the angels, are strengthened by prayer. The angels recognize prayer covering and prayer support as a powerful weapon, and without it, the darkness can and will often prevail over a person, location, and/or community (land). But the cool thing is, that one person praying, can fuel and strengthen the angels to defeat a mass amount of demons, or the hardest and most powerful demons... that's one person praying. Imagine two people praying, or five...or a whole church. Imagine the damage that a whole church praying can do to the dark world. This book also illustrated another point, a scary point, and that is these demons of darkness, dominions of Satan, are truly out to steal, kill and destroy all of humanity sparing no one. And their methods are often so subtle at first and lead to such incredible bondage later. Boy, do we need to clothe ourselves with the armor of God each and every day. Your thoughts?

Maui trip with the Walisz...fam

Aloha friends and family,
Sorry for the delayed update on the Pooles. Last week, David and I joined my family for a few days over in Maui where David worked (and played some) and I got to play and spend time with them. It was a much needed break for me, especially after working 3 weeks solid in some tough special ed cases. We joined them Sunday evening and came back Thursday morning. The pictures above are with the family in Maui...everything from blowholes, white sand beaches, to rocks that look like dragon's teeth (that's what the location is called, I promise I didn't make that up).
It was nice to be back in Maui. It felt like another home since growing up, using my dad's expertise, travel vouchers, and/or miles, we were privileged to vacation in Maui several times. If you ever travel to Maui, stay at the Papakea and eat at Lahaina Pizza place. The two best spots on the whole island ;)
Now it's back to work (or continuing to work for David). I already have two solid weeks of work. Praise God! Starting tomorrow, I'll be teaching in a 5th grade (not special ed) classroom at the local Christian school. I'm really excited for this teaching experience and for the change of pace. Pray for me. I know all the things I ever did to subs will come back to haunt me. Show me grace God, I apolgize to all my sub teachers out there, from elem school to high school. Gosh, I could be awful! I'm sure none of you ever treated your subs horridly (changing names during attendance, sticking notes on their back, putting something on their chair when they sat down, ...)? Did you?
The wind has calmed down...so I haven't been kiteboarding. But saving some money to travel to the other side of the island when the wind picks back up again.
David went diving with a bunch of guys last Saturday. He said it was a gorgeous day and so much fun to be out with the youth diving and grilling hamburgers. *I feel that Tim the Toolman's grunt is appropriate right now...insert here*.

We'd ask that you continue to keep us in your prayers. Life continues to be hard right now. It's a good reminder that paradise isn't always paradise. Ultimate paradise will be when we are standing before our Heavenly Father someday in heaven worshipping Him with all the other people who believed in Jesus Christ and therefore have eternal life! Woohoo, I'm excited for that day!

I wanted to post the Thailand pictures on behalf of David. I believe there are more to come. The majority of these pictures are taken on their fellowship fishing trip they took Saturday with one of the missionaries and some thai believers.
While David was in Thailand, I was able to have some time to myself. Although I stayed busy with youth group, work, meetings, I did have some time to miss my husband:) I also decided to make our living room and dining room a bit more homey. I stained, painted, designed and bought things to make it look 10x better. We found out we will probably get to stay in our current house longer than december, so I thought it was time to make it feel like home since this will probably be the longest we've stayed in one place since we've moved to Hawaii. So come one, come all and come visit us:)
Well what's new in the lives of the Pooles?
Now that we've hit October, it seems like our busy lives have accelerated. Thankfully, I've been getting a lot of work and now am pretty booked until November 5. God has been so faithful. Tis the season to work so I can have the season of travel and kiteboard:)
The youth group continues to have its ups and downs. Overall the youth group is about seeing kids come into a real relationship with Jesus Christ, and our prayer is that that is happening. I hope nothing we do never gets in the way of that. If we ever become a hinderance of that happening, I hope God removes us immediately. Every church brings its politics, unfortunately, and that is something we continue to try to dodge (as much as we can help it). Your prayer is greatly appreciated in this area.

In about a week, David and I will be heading to Kahalui, Maui, to join my parents and Trevor on a little R and R. This is something we have been looking forward to a long time. The last time David and I both were on Maui together was in December 2006 for the Waliszewski Christmas vacation. It'll be fun to re-visit my second home, well now third home:)

Your prayers are always appreciated as I continue to work (as a side job) about starting some sort of educational experience for high school and/or college here in Hilo, Hawaii. It's been on my heart for a while, and I found another gal here who has felt that God has been laying on her heart to start something similar. Currently, we are meeting once a week and watching what we believe God is piecing together...possibly something bigger than we've both imagined. We want to be in the center of God's will and are trying to sort what is God and what is not...whew...it's been quite the task. Do you have any similar stories or situations? Also, David and I will be traveling back to Colorado December 23- January 7. We would love to do a weekend in the mountains or anything...looking for a cheaper trip than Hawaii?..we would love to see you during our time in Colorado. Ok, well that's all for now folks. Better get back to our teen drama practice. Our teens have planned and prepared a drama to outreach during the Christmas season. Our prayer is that their daily lives reflect the truth they are performing.

hace calor en septiembre!

Hello ya'll,

Not sure what the weather is like in your neck of the woods, but it's hot here in Hawaii. We've been blessed with sunshine, blue sky, and picturesque views of our two beautiful volcanos Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. In fact, all you can think about is getting in that cool, crisp, and clear ocean water just to cool off.

David and I have been doing just that, still pursuing our recreational passions of diving and kiteboarding. The pics posted of the fish are recent catches by the one and only Kawika (David) Poole. The kiteboarding pic is a bit old, I've actually been flying my 14meter PINK kite lately. The last time I flew it, it got a big hole in what is called the strut (one of the parts that holds air). But, my Grandma will be so proud of me, I fixed it by sewing it myself...yes, yes I sewed. I'm still discovering many of my talents:)

How's the church and the youth group going? you ask...Well thank's for asking. Things are going well. We had 21 teenagers over at our house last night for a pizza party and a movie. Our house was bursting at the seams, well more like our living room, but cozy and hot as it was, we so much enjoy hanging out with the teens and meeting some of their friends. It's neat to see some of our teens inviting others from school. Church can be an intimidating place, but going over to someone's house for pizza...a whole lot less intimidating and definately more real. Our prayer is that these friends will start noticing a difference and asking our HMC teens questions that can lead to some spiritual conversations and ultimately more people coming to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. (This is our REACH part of the youth group)

We also are busy doing our BUILD part of the youth group called Mana Akua and Fuel. Mana Akua is happening Thursday nights. Our teens have the opportunity to take part in accountability groups, quiet time, and discussion of the Word of God. Then at the very end they have an application time. Currently, they are studying God's heart for the poor and needy and are working together to put on a costume drive so that needy kids in our community can participate in dressing up in events such as Harvest Parties. As much as I don't agree with the Halloween holiday, I do see that it can be used to meet a need and through that share the reason for the giving. Our youth group is trying to team up with a charitable organization called Food for the Keiki (children). From my understanding the organization is not Christian, but it's a great opportunity to get involved and one day help bring charity through a Christian understanding. Fuel is our Sunday service where our teens are studying the history behind some of the New Testament letters. Our hope is to get students in the Word of God where they can be changed and transformed. We can only do so much, it's through God's Word and the power of the Holy Spirit that these students can be eternally changed.

SEND is the last aspect of our youth ministry. We are doing Peer2Peer (training students to mentor peers) with One2One mentoring with church leadership. Six of our older students have given up 12 Saturdays where they are experiencing intense discipleship and challenging application. This is our trial season, and if it goes well we hope to continue this discipleship and sending with other groups of students in the future.

How are you and David you ask?

Well, we are doing well. Anticipating the 10 days apart while David is in Thailand, we are trying to hang out as much as possible. I will say that marriage is amazing, but brings its challenges as well. Hopefully we are just coming out of a season of challenges. We are learning that love and respect is communicated not just through words but through follow thru of promises made, tone of voice, how we speak about one another to others, sacrificing time and energy to bless one another, and supporting each other in dreams and passions. We know that we can't do this marriage selflessly on our own, it's Jesus Christ who has to change our hearts and help us die to ourselves that will make this marriage not only last but be fun and fruitful (not talking about kids here, more using marriage as a ministry....just to clarify, I know what you are thinking. It's not a day that goes by that I don't hear Laura Losada's voice saying, "I want little Poolines"...not happening anytime soon:).

What are you all up to in the next few weeks?

Well besides David going to Thailand, God has blessed me with three weeks of subbing. A definite financial blessing. Although I'll have to put kiteboarding on hold, it's nice to know I have some work ahead so that I can kiteboard, oh and pay the bills too:)

My folks and Trevor are coming over to Hawaii mid October, and we'll be meeting them in Maui for a little 4 day vacation. I'm looking forward to that.

back from Colorado

Hello all! Just a quick update, I'll write more later.
I just came back from a 5 day trip to Colorado! The reason I went was to mow my parent's acreage, however after the 6 hours of mowing most days, I was able to surprise my two Grandmas, surprise my HS bf Kelsey Travis, and catch up with family and friends! I was so spoiled to see my niece who will be celebrating 8 weeks of life the 16th of this month, Bella...what a treat! She is SO cute, and the best, most content baby I have ever seen. I know Christina and Pablo are blessed parents! It was fun watching my dad be Grandpa Bob (or however that works:).

David is going to Thailand in two weeks. They are leaving the 28th of September and coming back Oct 8. If you can keep him in your prayers:

RETREAT

Just got done with a Labor Day retreat! We had 22 students and 3-5 leaders (depending on the day). The kids experienced team building, surf lessons, sand castle contests, camping at Volcano, communion, hiking and jumping off towers into the ocean. It was a lot of fun, and a great way for the kids to hang out for 3 days. However, I was talking with one of the girls as she was about to go home and she mentioned that retreats are great, but it's getting back into "real life", that's hard. She seems to get spiritually "high" and then anticipates the great fall at the end. Can you relate to her?

A few days ago, I was having a phone conversation with a friend, Ali Lantz. I was explaining this situation of students getting "spiritually on fire" at retreats, camps, trips, etc. and then just crashing hard once they get back into real life. She shared that retreats, camps, trips are all opportunities to gain new perspectives on life. These opportunities do not signify growth, but opportunities for perspective changes. It's the "real life" and what you do in the day to day routine that signifies spiritual growth and change. Hmmm food for thought.

Aloha once again from the Big Island of Hawaii. I'll preface this blog by first stating that David and I do work believe it or not, however, often I feel that you may get this idea that we play all day:) Now that that has been said, I get to describe my new play toys...a kite and a board.

Once a week for about 5 weeks I've been going to the other side of the island and learning to kiteboard. This task requires learning to fly kites anywhere from 6 meters to 13 meters depending on the wind. These pictures show me flying my own 11 meter kite...pretty cool, huh? Flying these kites can be difficult, and after suffering some pretty crazy but purposeful and graceful face-plants (haha, just kidding, they were pretty rough), crashing my instructors kite on the beach, and multiple water crashes, I now can say I am finally getting it and can keep my kite in the air. The next step is to learn to put your board on your feet while flying this kite 40 feet up in the air. One would assume that putting a board on your feel while flying a kite would be a simple task, but imagine with me splashing, twisting, flailing of arms, grunts of frustration, and sighs of occasional defeat and you have me doing such a task. However, I'm starting to get it. Now I'm learning to put the two together...flying the kite and riding the board. It is such a thrill and adrenaline rush, that I will dream about kiteboarding for days. It's been such a neat hobby to learn, and I feel that God has blessed me by providing a pretty neat kiteboarding community and a very supportive husband.

David is learning to launch and land the kites, and when he's not doing that he is improving in his own hobby of spearfishing and diving. David is improving, and now catches at least one fish each time he goes. I'm really impressed that he is learning all the Hawaiian names of the fish and can pinpoint them in the water. We had a friend from college come visit this past weekend, Laura Miller. David took her out snorkeling and talked her through all the different type of creatures one can see when looking through a mask. We are trying to save some money to buy him a speargun so he can advance his diving.

David is also looking at the opportunity to go to Thailand this October. I hope we'll know for sure by this Sunday, but if you can keep that in your prayers (if God is truly calling him there, finances, opportunities to share Jesus, and safety). I truly hope it works out for him to go!

Thank you all for your prayers about work. I worked 4/5 days this week, and it's been a huge blessing. I'm really enjoying the challenge of working with different clients and meeting new people. Each day brings something different, and I'm finding that has been really good for me.

Starting next week our lives will be getting a bit busier. We'll be starting our weekly student group on Thursday nights, Mana Akua. And we have a retreat over Labor Day, which I'm a bit nervous about...but I know God will work out the details!

Something God is working in me is the passage in Exodus 14:14 where God tells Moses as the Egyptians were coming upon them just as they had been free to leave the land of Egypt, "The Lord will fight for you, you need only to be still". May that be an encouragement to you this week, as it has been to me.

Referring to church: "What's the point if you won't let it change you" Jake from To Save a Life

"What's the point if you won't let it change you" is the quote that has been consistently running through my brain. This past Friday we had about 20 teens over at our house for a movie night and fellowship. 'To Save a Life' was the movie of the night, a fairly decently filmed Christian teen movie addressing some hard issues of suicide, depression, cutting, divorce, pregnancy, abortion, and relationships. The main character Jake shows up to youth group as the youth pastor is talking about judgement. The youth pastor claims that in a survey, church was people's least favorite places because they feel judged. For the application part of the sermon, the pastor had the students take 30 seconds to think about who they may have judged in the past week. In that 30 seconds, most of the students were too distracted with different things to even give the youth pastor the time of day. Jake, a HS senior who is just beginning to try out this whole youth group thing, is disgusted with the lack of attention of the 'church' kids are giving to the youth pastor because just seconds ago his girlfriend walked out of the room because she too felt "judged". Jake, taking matters into his own hands, stands up and addresses his peers about their lack of conviction. He ends his monologue with a quote that has been with me to this day, "People are killing themselves and you (the youth group) are chugging soda through a sock (youth group game), what's the point of all this if you won't let it change you". For my church going friends, my challenge to you is just that...why play the Christian game (go to church, say the prayer, read the Bible) if you won't let it change you?

So anyhoo...to David and I. I subbed last week for my agency as well as for the local Christian school. I was able to teach Junior High English and Bible, and HS girl Bible...I loved it! Unfortunately the pay is minimal, but meeting the teens...priceless:) David is feeling more excited about the up and coming plans for Sonlife. I believe God has some cool things planned this year.

i had a cool title, now I forgot it

It's back to work for David and I, well I guess David has been working but his work this summer has been hanging out with students up on top of Volcanos and at sandy beaches...I have a hard time considering that work:) This has been my first week back to work. For those of you who don't know, I chose to sub this Fall. Although the pay is inconsistent, I felt that was what God wanted me to do. Thankfully, he's been providing. Monday and Tuesday I subbed for 2 different clients. It has been absolutely exhausting, but I'm so thankful for the work. Tomorrow I'm trying out our Big Island bus system at 5 am to go kiteboarding on the other side of the island...we'll see how that goes. I have David on call to pick me up if I get stranded. And Thursday and Friday I sub for junior high and high school at a local Christian school, I'm so excited for that one.

David has been working diligently on developing curriculum and programs for this coming Fall. I'm excited for the things that God has in store for us and these students. Bring it on!!

Thanks for all the bday wishes. I had a very chill bday. After church we came home and relaxed all afternoon. In the evening we had some great friends over for dinner and a movie. Aww...what a life! David gave me an incredible foot rub as we watched Covert Affairs on the computer (interesting show btw).

empty nesters

Greetings!

What are David and Kelsey up to now a days (I'm sure this is running through your mind since you decided to check out our blog)? Well, that's a great question, I'm so glad you asked.

We are officially empty nesters at the age of 23 (I'll go ahead and say it since my bday is August8:). Our two interns for the summer left on Tuesday. It was sad to see them go, they had been with us since May 10, and truly became part of the family. The students were really sad to see them go as well, they did such a great job connecting and building relationships. As David and I were driving back from the airport, I started to think how grateful I was that ministry isn't dependent on an individual. Ministry is all about Jesus. People come and go, but if ministry is done biblically, then no matter whose in a particular ministry, all of the focus is on Jesus. Yeah, sure, it is ok to miss people when they go, but ministry has to be all about Jesus. Never about the person. Paul picks this point up in 1 Corinthians 1:12 "I follow Paul" another says "I follow Apollos", and another says, "I follow Cephas", and still another says, "I follow Christ". Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul?... No matter where you are at, I encourage you to keep focused on Jesus. Pastors/leaders will leave, they will fall, they will fail, but when ministry is about who it should be about, then all get blessed! Unsure of what the new season entails, David and I are excited to uncover what God has in store for all of us at HMC.

David and I are officially an aunt and uncle to Bella Cosette Bonacic. Congrats Pablo and Christina!

My dad's bday is this Saturday!

David and I are about to celebrate our one year anniversary (august 1). Maybe we won't be considered the newly weds anymore? We are finally taking a little vacation around the island August 2-6! Finally!!

Well, school has started or is starting next week for our students. That means we have been trying to do a lot with them. Friday and Saturday of last week I spent with a bunch of girls at the Harris Farm. Tony (dad) and Lyndsey (daughter) planned a whole getaway for the girls. We played with baby animals (horse, goat, cow), went to the beach, and went and explored a lava tube. It was such a great time of fellowship and bible study. David and the guys went night diving, and hung out around the house until Sat night where they joined us for food, worship, and games. Yesterday (Wednesday), we went to Kapoho tide pools with some students. It is probably the best place to snorkel and hang out in the water. Needless to say, I'm a bit burned and hurting this morning.

I'm weary, I'm broken, I've cracked my heart wide open- Saving Jane

Aloha friends and family,

A little love from our casa to your casa, and an update from David and I too. That's always fun. Hmm...shall we start with the love?

Pretty cool that Jesus loves us, huh?

However, we christianitize God's love for us starting when we are wee babes in our mother's arms in the church nursery and we hear the tape player project the oldie song of "Jesus Loves Me". It then continues in our elementary years, when the answer for every question in Sunday school is "Jesus" and we are rewarded with a piece of candy for our trained efforts. Oh, no my friends, it doesn't stop there. In Junior High and high school we are patted on the back for our effortless Christianese response to life issues when talking to mentors and leaders in our lives, when in reality our hearts are questioning the very thing that has been engrained in us from our mother's womb: Jesus loves me. When is the last time you have taken time to truly ponder the meaning of Jesus Loves Me, You, Us, the World? When we hear that profound and awe inspiring statement, we tend to stifle a yawn and hold back from rolling our eyes "yeah, yeah, I heard that before". But my friends, can we ponder those three words this week...and if time allows, your response would be such an encouragement to me (kelsey.poole09@yahoo.com).

Update from David and Kelsey:

Last week was a pretty busy week for all of us. Moving into the house has allowed us to have the students over, and 4/7 days last week we had lots of students at our casa...which we loved. We've also had a student living with us going on 8 days now. Truly he is now part of the family along with our two interns Nate Hickox and Andrew Staal (my promised shout out...woot woot). David took about 20 students to the top of our Volcano, Mauna Kea, last Wednesday. Pretty cool to be at 13,000+ feet in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

My event of the week was learning to kiteboard...yesterday. My first out of many lessons (I go back next Tuesday). I spent about 4 hours learning to body drag with a 15 meter kite...whoa brah, there's choke power in dat ting (my pidgeon for the day). I also went night diving for the first time. I have to say, not my thing, I'll let David and the guys do it. Too cold, too wet, too eerie for me.

Well, we could use some intense prayer. David and I, especially David, have taken some beatings. Some hard ones and some good ones. But ultimately, it hasn't been fun and i see it wearing on him more and more each day. He hasn't been himself, and it is hard watching that. We plan to take some R and R the first week in August, it is very very needed for the two of us. Pray that God reveals himself in Big ways and brings light and clarity in a very confusing situation. There are many fingers pointing, and many opinions to the root of the problem...but we want God to reveal His solution.

I'm really at a point of brokenness and sometimes I feel beyond repair, but then I remember Jesus Loves Me.

"Ready or not, here I come"- Life

Well, here I am again. Sitting in the spaciousness of my kitchen, typing up another passage of David and Kelsey's adventure in Hawaii. I'm realizing life never does stop. In college, you always had an "end" in sight. Halfway through a semester, I recall thinking, well 6 more weeks until the "end". As finals arrived it turned into, one more day until the "end". Now, on the outskirts of college life, I find that there is no "end" in sight. Life continues to keep on rolling, and you take the punches as they come. Breaks don't come as generously and/or freely as they did back then (Here I am, talking like my grandpa and the good ol days:)

Although life keeps on coming, whether I'm ready or not, it always brings new opportunities to grow; growth in my relationship with Christ, my husband, family, friends, acquaintances, or heaven forbid- enemies (growth in a sense of working out issues so relationships aren't severed). So that's where I begin, a quote I believe we all have experienced, "Ready or not, here I come." says Life.

I think I already mentioned that David and I have moved into a house (rental, not quite ready to buy just yet). It is very spacious, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, and a huge kitchen and living area. We feel blessed, but of course are taking a huge step in faith financially as well. However, I must say that on Saturday we had about 15 students over hanging out playing telephone pictionary, having an amazing time of worship and prayer, and eating great food (if I do say so myself) and we just knew this is the place we are suppose to be in this season.

We covet your prayers as we face the battle against the Enemy. God reminds me continuously, that our battle is not with flesh and blood, but against the Ruler of Darkness. And boy, has Satan been aggressive lately. I tell ya, there have been many tears shed and many "what are we going to do-s" said, however, besides the armor of God, one of our biggest tools we use against the Enemy is love... Loving others. I think Jesus is on to something when He says Love your enemy, do good to those who persecute you (I know, I know you are thinking to yourself..no duh Kelsey, this is Jesus your talking about). But how often do we take those words for granted, or they become the Christianese lingo in our little Christian lives. Truly, Jesus was uncovering the biggest weapon known to man...love...Love counteracts all societal norms and human-ness. When used appropriately (that is with the Holy Spirit) it can soften hearts and reconcile relationships.

A simple four letter word love.

Please pray that David and I will walk in an abundance of love as these battles continue to come our way.

By the way we bought a couch...our first one after almost a year of marriage...I see it as our anniversary present...yes, yes...we are a little over 2 weeks away from celebrating our first anniversary as Mr. and Mrs Poole (hold your applause please, your making me blush):)

Hello friends and family,
I apologize for the belated blog post. June was quite the month. Speaking of which, where do I begin?

I left beautiful Hawaii for beautiful Colorado on the evening of June 5. By the way, I do feel very blessed when I get to travel between two beautiful places. My trip to Colorado was great, but wasn't the vacation I thought I'd get. The first 10 days I spent solidifying plans for the Colorado trip David was heading up with 17 students and 6 leaders. I was also able to spend a weekend with my beautiful cousin Haley Black (oops actually Haley Hendrickson, doesn't that just roll off the tongue) helping her prepare for the wedding. A moments pause...a little shout out to Haley, Haley you were the calmest bride, by far, that I've ever met the week before and even the day of the wedding. Andrew and Haley Hendrickson were married the evening of June 20, and what a beautiful wedding it was.

"Ready or not, here they come" was my motto on June 16, the day students arrived. Due to the kindness of family and friends, I had gathered 25 sleeping bags and with the help of my mother in law had prepared a small cabin for 11 girls and a Yurt for 11 boys. ( you may be asking what is a yurt? well imagine with me an alien spaceship, put some bunkbeds in it and you have yourself a yurt) It was a miracle that all the kids were able to fit into such a small space, but we only needed these two housing accommodations for sleep purposes only, and they fulfilled their jobs. The trip consisted of Focus on the Family, shopping at the mall, Penny Arcade in Manitou, team building games, night games, Indoor skydiving, scavenger hunt, homeless ministry ice skating...whew let me catch my breath....breath caught, I'll continue...rock climbing, hiking, pool, horseback riding, mini bikes, elitch gardens and boating. But the highlight of the trip for everyone was the Desperation Conference at New Life Church. God rocked all of our boats, and our students experienced God in a new and first hand way.
I've never seen such change in our students. These students came in with division amongst the group, and left with true unity and love for one another understanding "what makes one tick". Some came with an attitude of I'm-a-Christian-because-I-grew-up-in-the-church and left with a real relationship with Jesus Christ. Some came with a timidity and complacency in their faith and left with a fire of passion and boldness to reach the lost. Sunday, June 27, David and I were praying on our own and came together and felt the Lord lay on both of our hearts Acts 2, specifically the idea of baptism. We presented the opportunity to the students to be baptized as a statement of dying to the old self and living in the new representing what Christ did in their hearts on this trip and 9 students decided that once stepping off the plane in Kona, they were going to be baptized in Hilo at Coconut Island in the dark June 30. From what I heard, it was absolutely incredible.

Please continue to pray for us and our students. Anytime you are working to see Jesus transform hearts and minds, it is a battle. And we feel that battle each and every day.

Please pray for David and I. This is a new season for me and work, which is scary since we just increased our housing (moved into a 3 bedroom house) and I don't have a consistent job. God provides...

Backpacking to Waimanu (pics to follow)

At 5 a.m on Friday, David and I along with another couple, Chris and Heather, took off on what we now consider an adventure of a life time. We were so excited, and had no idea what we were getting into. We began our adventure going down a steep incline, what is known as Waipio Valley. Only 4x4s are allowed to tackle this road, and unfortunately, we did not have a vehicle. So using our own two feet, we tumbled down the steep road and walked a mile on a beautiful black sand beach. Then our adventure began. After 8 hours of hiking 9 valleys with the final steep descent into Waimanu, we made it to our beloved vacation spot. But first, let me explain this hiking. I would describe it more like rock climbing in some areas. The beginning was a Z line trail that in less than a mile gained about 2200 ft in elevation. Once we summitted, we then walked in and out of 9 different valleys, 4 of which were pretty extreme. In the back of these valleys we saw waterfalls, streams, coffee trees, jungle, pine trees, you name it, we saw it. In less than 3 hours we had run out of water, that is how much we were sweating. But thankfully, my amazing husband brought iodine tablets and we watched the magic take place after getting water from the waterfalls (if you don't know what iodine tablets and water do, try it as an in home experiementt...its fascinating...and then you wonder...I'm going to drink that stuff?:) The trail was well marked but very narrow, rocky, and slick. We were so blessed to not have rain, because that would have made the trail even more difficult.
Once to our beloved campsite, we set up tents and went to go find our water source. About a 15 min hike took us to our water source a waterfall surrounded by mango and mountain apple trees. This waterfall had a multi-purpose use... drinking water, bathing, coolant, etc. We found it to be truly amazing and were very appreciative of fresh water.
When we got there, David and I cooked up our Mac and Cheese and sat around the fire facing the ocean for a bit...and went to bed. However, we did make a friend. A hunter who set up tent back in the valley, a bit drunk and high, decided he was going to go hunting that night and invited our husbands to join. Chris and David were pretty exhausted and decided to sleep instead, a wise choice, however we were awoken twice in the middle of the night with him, his buddies, and the many dogs running through our camp either with Kailua pig (already cooked pig Hawaiian style) and a fresh killed boar which he poked in Chris guys tent and made a roaring noise...a bit strange to say the least. Saturday, we ended up hiking to another waterfall way back in the valley. There we at the Kailua pig and relaxed. Sunday our husbands felt like true Hawaiians shaking mountain apple trees (then we ducked because it showered mountain apples), throwing rocks to get coconuts, cutting banana trees, and talking about how they were going to kill a pig, which they never did :(
Monday AM, we left super early and started the hike. It took us 6 hours to get to the car, and we were booking it. It still was difficult, and David and I were sure feeling our muscles last night.

We are now officially homeless. Can't call a home our own. We have moved out of our apartment and won't move into our house until July. However, we are blessed to have a house sitting job until June 14. David and the interns leave June 15, which is perfect. It's been so nice to have a big house to relax and retreat...however, here we are at the church hitting the ground running once again...

Keep praying for us. The R and R was good and well needed, but it continues to be busy. God is good, He is faithful, and really its His ministry...we are just mere tools. We have to keep reminding ourselves daily when we fall short. Its all His, it is all about Him!

You know when life is overwhelming and you have too many things going on...sometimes you feel like you are drowning. Ok, so the title may read a little funny, but it's a little shout out to my amazing husband who just celebrated his 23rd birthday! Yes, yes we are young. Art just alluded to us being his grandkids:)
David has many pictures to post. Our exciting news is that the interns, aka Nate and Andrew, arrived Monday night. They are great guys and already are plugging away with our students. In their 4 days of being here they've gone night diving and each caught a fish (my husband also caught a tako, octopus), went and played in the lava (ok with the lava sounds better and is probably a bit more accurate), cleaned and painted our storage room, know almost every student's name in our mana akua group, tried lihi moi (sp?) on dried mango, and participated in our young adult Bible Study. Whew, leave it to the Pooles for a quick intro into the Hawaiian culture. Needless to say, I think they slept in to like noon today, which was much needed, especially with the 6hr jet lag...ok in the future we'll be a bit more gracious. We were just really excited to get their feet wet in Hilo, literally!

Fundraisers, dinners with church members, and family night (hot wings and board games) lay ahead for this weekend.

Aloha friends and family,
Happy Mothers Day to all you moms. David and I believe, actually know, that we are truly blessed to have incredible mothers and grandmothers! So thank you moms and grandmas for being incredible, dealing with us in our off days, praying for us continuously, loving us unconditionally.

Well a few updates in our lives. I an article for Susie magazine, and it will be featured in the September issue. For those who don't know, Susie mag is a Christian magazine for teen girls. I did my internship with Susie last Spring (2009). Since then I've done a few "Guy Talk" interviews, and just wrote up an article about "Surfing with Bethany Hamilton" (the gal who lost her arm in a shark attack but still continues to surf). Needless to say, I'm thrilled!

Things are going well with the church. As an answer to prayer, we now have a little more parent involvement when it comes to the task of fundraising. Let me tell you, fundraising here ain't easy. But we keep trusting the Lord for his provision!

As for David and I, come this summer we will be stepping out in faith in a few areas of our lives. A lot of changes are going to be happening in my vocation, which can be scary but I believe these changes will realign me in God's calling in my life. We appreciate your prayers as we "chase the wild goose (Holy Spirit)" in His leading in our lives. It truly makes us trust him more for our needs.

I'll be back in Colorado a month from today (June 6). So, I'd love to see you all. The Hawaii students come out June 16-30. We are looking for help with transportation, host homes/facilities, and food. If you can help in either area we'd greatly appreciate it! Below is a brief schedule of our plans. Kelsey update:
Whew, where do I begin. I'm still working for my same client, although the job is becoming a bit exhausting. I'm putting in about 34 hours of work at this agency, and then many hours of volunteer work for the church. At the end of the day/week, I'm pooped! But David and I believe that this is the season to work, and work hard. Thursday and Friday afternoons I've begun 2 different Bible studies. Right now only 1-2 girls are attending, but I believe if more are to come God will lay it on their hearts to come. If not, I'm enjoying getting to know these girl's hearts and passions.

Fundraising seems to be our lives at the moment. Because David has so much on his plate, and learning to be an administrator as well as Pastor, I decided to take over the fundraising efforts. In our efforts we are trying to raise 10,000 dollars in the month of May. Any donation, group fundraising effort, and individual fundraising effort will be calculated. If our student can raise 10,000 in the month of May, 1000 dollars will be thrown into the pot that will be for a special surprise once they are in Colorado. Also, David has agreed to the fate of his hair (color, style, cut). If they can reach the goal, the student will take the first Sunday in June to give David a total makeover which he will keep up until the trip. For Haley's wedding, we do need David looking somewhat presentable. I'm not sure she'll want a clown showing up in her family wedding pictures. What a memory!

We are moving into a house in July. We are moving out of our apartments at the end of May, housesitting and Colorado for June, and come back and move in July. And get this, we are moving into the old youth pastor's old house. This house apparently has a youth ministry annointing or something. We have this house until December, and after that, who knows?

David update:
David is being stretched in many ways. His gifting and passion is studying and teaching God's Word, but he is realizing that youth ministry requires event planning and administrative skills. He is developing those very quickly at a forced rate.

We are both excited for the vision this summer. Our hope is that is won't be so programatic, but relational and intentional, meeting the students where they are at and going from there.

We are working on putting into place guidelines (rules) that are biblically based and can be a standard keeping student's behavior accountable. Please pray for David as he puts this together.

Well, I wish I could say something humorous. We seem to be burning the midnight oil, and I'm wiped out. Thankfully in July, I should be working with a new client in a school setting, more down my alley. David, is praying for more leaders. He seems to be wearing many different hats as the youth pastor, and we are praying for more people who have a heart for youth ministry to step in and use their gifting and calling to impact the live's of these Hilo students.

Aloha friends and family,
I'm asking for 30 seconds of your time. If you are busy like us, you don't have time to read paragraphs of rambling, so I'm going to do all of us a favor, I'm going to condense the past week into a few major points...Ready...set...go! (enjoy:)

-This past Monday, David and I took our Sabbath and explored a GREEN sand beach, yes yes, you read it right, a green sand beach. The green is from a semi-precious gem called olivite (I think, I may have totally butchered the name, but you get the point:))

-David and I are also healing from some incredibly painful sunburns. While hiking to the green sand beach, we forgot our sunscreen (which is a necessity for us white haole folk, we envy those who tan), and we are currently suffering the consequences

-We have the opportunity to move into a house in July...(*jumping up and down in glee*) The house is available until December, but at least we know we have a place until the end of the year

- David, especially, has had some incredible opportunities in the past 24 hours to share the truth of Jesus Christ with 2 different individuals. We ask that you join us in prayer that they would discover the truth and understand it through a real and first hand way!

-Congrats to my dad who has a chapter published in Dr. Dobson's new book Bringing up Girls! Next time your in a bookstore check it out and email him at walis3@msn.com to tell him congrats!

Easter Time

Just wanted to give you all, friends, family and complete strangers who just happened on this site, an update on David and I and our life in Hilo. I continue to thank God for allowing us to live in Hilo, have a roof over our heads and food to eat, jobs, and new friends and church family here. We are blessed. But, I won’t lie, I do get the occasional homesickness. I miss my family…Brother at school (I miss our coffee dates), parentals, Grandmas, Aunts and Uncles and especially my cousin, who I am missing all the wedding planning…soon enough though Haley, soon enough… I miss my Bethel friends, especially my girls (HS girls too). But it’s cool to see God doing different things in each of our lives. Laura just left for Columbia to start a new job, Rach getting married in June, Britt in Africa, Beth getting married in July, Dani a teacher, Danni an RA, Emily in DC, Ali in ministry with hubby, Jenna moving doing a dream of hers…and so much more! Then I look at some of my HS girl friends. Meg and hubby in Spain, Kels getting married in Jan and moving to Ireland. Britt G traveling all across the country doing crazy mountain things with hubby, and more. Wow, God is good and is using us in incredible ways. That I’m so thankful for that.

Well, things are going well here in Hilo. We are thinking we are going to move out of the apt at the end of May…hurray! We’ll be housesitting for half of June and then off to Colorado…so hopefully we won’t be having to pay for Rent that month which would be a huge blessing! Be praying things open up for a housing option for July at least through December.

David and I had a super busy 2 weeks before Easter. Easter the students did a fabulous job presenting the gospel through drama, song, and signing. We are so proud of them and grateful to one of our leaders for all her hard work. Life has kinda settled down for a while. We are working on fundraising, team building, and details of the Colorado trip while still running Mana Akua Thursday nights and Fuel on Sunday mornings. We also have been trying to do more Bible Study and mentoring with the students (David with the boys and I with the girls).
I feel like I’m on pause in my job. Still praying things will open up with Bethel and unsure about this coming Fall. Lord will reveal it in due time.

Well for those who are getting nice weather on the mainland, it is your turn to point and mock. We have been getting a LOT of rain here in Hilo. David and I are looking to go to the other side of the island or the top of the volcano and do some Hiking and see some sunshine…we are sure missing the sun! We are looking to hike an old rainforest, and also to a green sand beach…how fun is that!

Also, quick story from Easter. We had a Baptism sunrise service at 6:00 AM Sunday AM. As we were singing
“Praise God to whom all blessing flow
Praise Him all creatures here below”…
We saw a mom and baby whale, not even 50 yds off shore breach (come out of the water) over and over again. So appropriate because, they too, were praising God I believe. So us and the whales were praising God for his faithfulness in fulfilling His love and promise to humanity!
David, Pastor Daniel, and the fathers baptized 4 kids on Sunday. A little girl, a 5th grader, a 6th grader and a 7th grader. Continue to pray that these kids lives will be transformed by the love of work of the Holy Spirit!

Palm Sunday: Enter...Jesus

Can you believe it is Palm Sunday? Easter or Resurrection Sunday more appropriately named is a week away. It is so easy to be swept away into our own business, and let another Resurrection Sunday pass. Instead I pray that you allow this week to be a launching point that radically changes your life. You may already know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, make sure He's Lord over your life. You may already know Him as Lord, make sure you know Him as Savior. You can't have one without the other. Even those who know Christ and having been walking with Him, can still die to things about themselves and know Him in a more deep and intimate way.

Our students at SONLIFE have been working hard at dramas, signing, hulas that all point to Jesus Christ being Savior. We pray that the Holy Spirit solidifies the Lordship in all of our lives as well.

Well David and I had a great time with my Grandma. We were able to show her little bits of our lives in Hilo. My folks left yesterday all nice and toasted. We keep trying to convince them to move out here. But believe it or not, as of now, they do not have another trip planned yet...that could change in the matter of seconds.

Yesterday we had a huge Garage Sale/Car Wash and raised almost $1200. We of course need a lot more trying to send almost 20 people, however, God is providing in some incredible ways and we are so thankful for the parents who are helping plan large group fundraising opportunities.

This week should be a little less busy (I always think that, and it never is the case). I'm trying to get over a head cold...yuck! I think this is the first time I have been really sick in our marriage, and I have an amazing husband who has been waiting on me hand and foot which I am so thankful for and I think has led to my speedy recovery. David and I are going to help take care of our friend's mother/mother in law (for Art). Art and Donna are celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary and we have the privilege of being with Mamacita while they are gone, we are looking forward to that. After they get back we move to another house where we will be chilling with some of our youth students while their parents are in Oahu. Not babysitting (because they are old enough to take care of themselves) but what a wonderful opportunity to spend some time together with 2 of our students.

busy busy

Aloha friends and family,
Gosh, it's been a while since I last gave you all the update. Let's just say it has been pretty busy here on the Big Island.
A few weekends ago we had a group of Bethel students come and stay with us. They were coming to recruit/be counselors for a Missionary church camp in Oahu. It was so good to see familiar faces, and even meet a new freshmen. I love when people from different backgrounds and different majors unite to 1)recruit for Bethel but 2) most importantly devote an entire week to share Jesus Christ to teens from all over the islands! I pray their efforts were fruitful.

David then launched into his own spring break activities with our hmc teens. We started off with a pi retreat on March 14...I'll let you figure that one out (answer is below). He, along with some parents and leaders, took the kids to the beach on Kona side, while I sadly had to work, *sigh*. What was great about the retreat was that we had about 4 new faces show up, we love meeting new teens! David then had beach Olympics at Bayfront Tuesday. My husband came home nice and toasty after two days from being in the sun. Wednesday we had a family movie night at the dollar theatre where we watched the Blindside. If you have not seen this movie, it is a MUST SEE! What an excellent movie. David and I looked at each other and said, "We want to have hearts/compassion/sacrifice like that family".

My parents and Grandma are currently here visiting. We realized after them, we don't have anyone visiting until our Bethel interns in May. So if you are longing for that vacation with sunshine, white sand beaches, and surf...well Hilo may not be for you (that is Kona side). But if you are longing for beautiful ocean, black sand beaches, and awesome fellowship...well we'd love for you to come visit!

Prayer requests!
-Strength especially in my job (it requires a lot of time and energy)
-Communication and Direction for HMC youth
-A house to live in/ not an apartment one that allows us to have our teens over and allows us to have a pet
-A Bethel semester abroad opportunity starting Jan 2011 (maybe?)

Bethel visitor and movie set all in one weekend

Whew, what a busy week! Where do I begin? Well David and I had our first Bethel visitor *drum roll please* Joel Runyon come visit us Thursday night through Saturday night. And what fun we had! After work David and Joel went diving, and as the story goes they shot a puffer fish...why shoot a puffer fish you environmentalists ask? I don't know, you'll have to ask my husband. Friday after work I brought home pizza, and we just sat around and talked. I was about ready to talk them into going to go see a movie, when they came up with this brilliant and strange idea of camping and seeing the stars at the top of Mauna Kea. Well, I'll let you guess what we did between movie and camping/stars? Yep, you guessed it, camping and stars. We actually had a really great time. We got as close to Mauna Kea as we could and watched the stars for about 45 min in sub zero degree temperatures...ok...not that bad but super cold! Looking at the vast universe with the millions of stars led to some incredible conversation. God is so BIG and we are so small was our ultimate conclusion. It really was an incredible time. We then made our way down to Kona side where we parked and the three of us decided to camp in the back of our Ford explorer. It made for an interesting and cramped night. Saturday we went to the beach and snorkeled and threw the frisbee, watched the dophins, went grocery shopping at Cosco and spent way too much money, played tourist with Joel as our tour guide, and had a fabulous dinner (says the cook).
Sunday was a very busy day for us. We had youth group, our college/jr/sr small group and David went Noni picking and I went to Oahu. David and I felt that we haven't spent enough time away from each other that another weekend apart would be fantastic (please note the sarcasm). David and the students raised a lot of money in just one day for the Colorado trip...hurray! I went to Oahu to meet my dad since he was invited by Sony to be on set of a new film being made called Soul Surfer, a story about Bethany Hamilton's life. For those of you who don't know, Bethany Hamilton when she was 13 lost her arm in a shark attack while surfing. 3 weeks after the losing her arm, she was back in the water...surfing. She now, at age 20, is ranked the 14th best female pro surfer in the world. Pretty cool stuff. I had the privilege of hanging out with the producers, promotion guys, media experts, and the entire Hamilton family including her youth pastor, Sarah Hill, who had tremendous influence in Bethany's life. Meeting Sarah was probably my favorite part of the whole trip. She was genuine and so passionate for the Lord, I could see how the Holy Spirit has used her life to influence others. We exchanged phone numbers and hope to do some youth ministry together in the next few years. Oh, I almost forgot, I joined all the media-guys for an all expense paid surf lesson by instructors and Bethany Hamilton. Needless to say I am in so much pain today. I didn't know I had some muscle in my arm, shoulder, back, and neck...ouch!
Well it's back to work for both David and I (although he worked Monday as I took surfing lessons). We would ask that you join us in prayer for next week especially. David has planned a 3-day SPRING BREAK event, and we want to see new students come, old students come, fun, safety, and most importantly that the Holy Spirit would come in and radically transform and convict all of us in supernatural ways.

We are also having a big drug problem with our neighbors next door. I'm beginning to think that we need to move, and move in the next month. So God has to open up affordable and practical doors for us to move in Hilo and prefferably a house that allows us to have a pet.

We have 4 Bethel students coming this weekend to recruit for Bethel. Speaking of Bethel, I have a proposal out there to the VP of Bethel, and I've been praying God really opens some doors in the next year with this proposal.

Patience and endurance with my job. Love my client, but there are some things that are getting weary. I need the strength of God each and every day.

WE ARE FINE. We did have tsunami, but minor, no damage. It was pretty incredible to watch the water at around noon today...

it's been a while

Whew, well hello, I'm back again.

It has been a busy couple weeks. Some of you I saw just this past week in the snowy and very cold state of Colorado. But before I get there...let me back up...

Friday, Feb 12, we had a Valentine's Day dinner. Let me just say, I am so incredibly proud of our students and my husband. A lot of behind the scenes needed to happen, and my job has me working about 8.5 hours a day, which does not give me much time to do anything else (we are working on that right now). So David, who has not been much of an event planner in the past, did an incredible job down to the detail of getting things set up. That night, the students took over and ran the whole event. They did great! And many compliments were shared; the adults were so impressed with how the students presented themselves...so way to go HMC Sonlife!

David and I then had a very random trip to Oahu. We were suppose to meet my dad for a movie set (a movie called Soul Surfer), but things were postponed, but David and I were left with tickets to Oahu and a hotel in Honolulu...so we went ahead and went. What turned out to be a very expensive Vday had many memories made as well. David and I rented our first working car (email me if you would like that story). We then went and drove around the island. Many of you recieved my texts that we saw John Locke from the TV series LOST...yes, be jealous:) We laid on Waikiki beach, walked downtown Honolulu, watched surfers at Sunset beach, ate delicious shrimp from the shrimp farm...good times:)

David then had a 5 day conference in Oahu and I went to Colorado to visit family and put on a bridal shower for my beautiful cousin/sister getting married in June. While home I saw family, my doggies and horses, went snowboarding with my dad, and ate some really amazing food. We don't have Chipotle in Hawaii, but please don't let that discourage anyone from coming:) However, this was the first time away from my husband for a long time, and I missed him very much. It was so good to see him at the airport on Sunday, picking me up in our God-car, and heading to our apartment which has an ocean view, knowing we both have work Monday...I say all this not to boast in myself, because left unto me or David we would have nothing...nothing of value at least. But because it has been God all the way, and even despite our mistakes He still provides, protects, loves, gives, etc...we are Amazed at God's goodness. So I say all that to brag on God, He has been so good to us, and we are so blessed!

We are wanting to move into a new apartment or better yet a house soon...maybe based on this proposal...but some specifics...at least 2 bedrooms, a great place to host youth and other people, safe neighborhood, good parking, pets allowed, and affordable!

Aloha everyone!

Just a quick update from my seminar to post some pics from O'ahu thus far. Hope you all enjoy!

Kelsey and I spent some time here on O'ahu for Valentines since I had this seminar and she was travelling back to see family in Colorado. Other than Honolulu side, I really enjoy being on this island.

This seminar has been really good so far. I feel that this idea of true, transformational discipleship is what I have been longing for and desiring to do. I am really seeking the Spirit as to how it needs to be done, but that will come.

Hopefully I will get some more time to post some long awaited pics from when the Waliszewski's were out, as we visited Hapuna and Waipio Valley that I finally put on the computer.

**the little girl picture is me at 2 years old. My aunt Susan sent it to us and David said he would us it as blackmail. But I figured if I could confidently display this on a public blogging site, it can no longer hold as blackmail.

Well hello there:

I'm here at HMC church writing while David is just right out the door practicing a drama with our teens that they are performing during Easter. I have to admit, these teens are amazing. They have dedicated an entire day (9am-6pm) to practicing for the Easter production, and they are good!

So, I know it's been a little while, but let me catch you up with life. I'm going to start by talking about my Hawaii dental experience. I know you are on the edge of your seats for this story, but patience my friend...

So yesterday I went to the dentist. Let me tell you, Hawaii dentistry is thorough and very painful. But I've never seen a dentist office so efficient with their time and on schedule. They ushered me into the first room, where I had over a billion Xrays taken, ok, not that many but I don't know how many times I heard "Open you mouth just a little bit wider, now it's going to pinch, wait there...hold it" as they run to click the button while you are sitting there with cardboard sticking out of your mouth feeling like you might gag at any moment. Anyone been there with me? Well I then saw the actual dentist, I nice man who explained the procedure of checking my gums as he showed me a needle device about 1 1/2 inches long. I panicked, "That device is going in my gums?" Well not quite but close, that man poked at my gums checking for swelling and bleeding...I thought, well yeah of course they are going to swell and bleed if you are poking me with that...but he proceeded to continue, I guess he knew what he was doing:) Then they ushered me into another room where a jovial lady was waiting to finally clean my teeth. This lady was the sweetest lady until she started cleaning my teeth. Ruthless, that's all I have to say. It took 24 hours for my mouth to finally feel normal again. Well why am I sharing this with you? As I always do, I see Christian parallels from normal life situations. Although the whole dental experience was quite uncomfortable and painful, and I questioned the mental capacity of a man poking me with a needle, my teeth turned our clean and my mouth more healthy. I just wonder if that's what it's like with God when we ask him to clean us out and "purify us". It's uncomfortable and then becomes quite painful, we begin questioning Him looking to other things to relieve the pain, but in the end it is totally worth it. We are pure, we are clean!

We have a very busy week ahead of us. My R.D. from Focus on the Family Institute is coming to visit on Tuesday. I'm really excited to catch up with her.

God has given me a passion and a vision for a college opportunity here on the islands. I'm not sure how it's going to happen, but I've had a few conversations with people and it seems I'm not the only one who shares the passion...we'll see what God has in store.

David is staying busy. He's busy planning a Vday dinner for our youth group Feb 12, he then goes to a week conferene in Oahu and then the following week has a 2 day conference in Kauai...gosh, I wish I had his job:) But I'm blessed because he's letting me go visit Colorado for a few days 15-21, so I'm looking forward to seeing family!

Our biggest youth project is the Colorado Trip for the Desperation Conference, helping the homeless ministry, and some fun!. We are needing to help these students fundraise and we are praying for a great deal on tickets (group rate). Aloha friends and family,

Just an update from Hilo Hawaii. We ended up not getting the house. It was the cutest little house, however, when we took Art (friend and sub parent in Hawaii) to go see it, he said that give it one earthquake and the house will be a tumbling. So we withdrew our bid. We know God has something else in store in His timing. But isn't it interesting that something so beautiful and good on the outside, can be so unsturdy and ugly in reality. It can relate to Christianity. We can look so good on the outside, but in reality we can be so dirty and shaky on the inside. Hmmm just an interesting thought!

I'm sure enjoying my new client at work. She's taught me more these past couple weeks than I've taught her. We'll see what the future has in store.

David is staying busy. He took a Sabbath yesterday, very much needed and went running, beach, and diving. Very healthy for the spirit, mind and body.
